Repeater, Where is it located?

W1GUH

Somewhere in the LA area...

Two points about it...

It's the only repeater I can reach that has much activity. It seems to be very active all the time.

The conversations tend towards subjects that some of us love to discuss. Some of 'em won't fly here on qrz.

The LA repeater guide with the yellow cover (pretty much a local thing here) sez, "Caution..X-rated". And that's pretty much true.

Sorry, Paul, but those guys are in the idiota category.

I think off the scale is fun, sometimes, but that repeater pegs the "boring" meter. Creative crude is funny. Crude for the sake of crude is lame.

Kind of like a certain other "tries to be alternative" ham website...

I can't seem to get it from here. I tried just about everything after it was said to be an x rated repeater. Maybe I need a bigger antenna. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

The 435 repeater is located at Contractor's Point, where the San Fernando Valley and Santa Clarita Valley meet.

It's an L.A. area repeater; however in the past it has been located on Mt. Wilson, Saddle Peak and other locations around L.A.

On Sunday evening there's a "Jeopardy!" type triva net which is pretty cool.

I can get into it with 100mW and rubber duckie from anywhere in the house, but it's only about 12 miles from me.

Maybe not on that machine (it's so busy) but any other machines we can hook up on? I can do the the Santa Monica machine on 447.320...and there's a bunch I haven't tried yet.

If you're by LAX airport, try the TRW repeater on 145.320. It's very strong by the airport, and I can get into it easily (it's in Redondo Beach).

Problem is, I don't routinely listen to any repeater at all...

If you want to try monitoring TRW (.320) for a couple of hours starting in maybe one hour from now, I'll flip it on and give a few calls there.

Yep, I get it good. In fact, it's the only one where I had a QSO with a guy driving home. I'll monitor it and hope to hear from you. I'll call give you calls at random times.

BTW...are they doing the Hamfest this month? If so, I'll almost certainly be there.

Check that...I just found out that I don't make it from my room here...but I'll be in Manhattan Beach this evening and will keep an ear out for you. If you've got 440, the Hughes machine on 445.620 is a go here. Also the 146.700 machine. I'll be scanning.

Hell yes I listen to them. I wish there were more repeaters like 435. Most on 435 are fairly intelligent people who like to have fun. Isn't that what this hobby is about, having fun? If you don't want to hear it, turn the VFO!!!!!!

At least this repeater is entertaining (except when KE6OLD is on, complaining of his lupus). Most ham repeaters are now infiltrated with HIHI OMs talking about their medical condition, the weather or badmouthing their neighbors. This repeater provides ENTERTAINMENT!!!

I think he means he listens to it via the Internet.

There is a link on their web site to monitor the '435 but I don't know if they have an EchoLink node in operation. #I think at one time they did.

To me the content of the repeater was very juvenile, but the artwork on the web page is pretty cool.

As long as you're in the area, GUH, you're most likely to find me on 146.700 [which I know you've used before - I've heard you], 146.610 [most likely on Friday nights starting at 7pm - drop by and find out why!], 145.200 [a low-level repeater in Arcadia], and occasionally 144.970 [note: input is 147.405], 145.220, and 146.985. #On even less frequent occasions, I might be on 147.270 or 146.730. I've also been known to use 144.350 simplex, but my indoor [apartment] antennas limit my range.

There are a great many 2m repeaters that I can hear, but only a few that I use with any regularity. #You will not find me on "435."

Well, I'm new, and some nights it's great (435) and other nights it's not.

But...last Saturday I was in and out on the machine, and one of the guys looked me up on QRZ and found my old call (K8TFH), and called me (he said he wanted to make sure I was who I said I was).

He had me at K8TFH. It's been 34 years since I've heard that call on the air. Bless him.

Paul, good to chat with you yesterday evening on the TRW/Northrop-Grumman machine 145.320. You had a fine signal, pretty much full quieting all the time except when you were in the hotel room.

The 440 repeater I was telling you about is PAPA-4 on Saddle Peak, 445.420 MHz, PL 127.3. It's line of sight from where you are, and also from where I am. It's also where 147.435
used to be, years ago, when it had better coverage than it does now. (Not sure why it moved, but I suspect it was too expensive to keep it there.)

I listen to it on occasion via the internet.

The behavior on it varies. Sometimes its way over the edge, the language and other stuff being discussed not being part of the intent of ham radio, definetely.

But there are times I've turned it on and it seems like people are just shooting the breeze.

The odd thing about it is that it seems to have about 5 different remote inputs, and sometimes it becomes a keydown fest. The only thing I can figure is that its remote bases, and people set them up close to the repeater to beat other people into it, or somehow the inputs have some kind of priority.

The conversations vary. Some are definetely off color, and it can range anywhere from stuff I hear on a regular repeater, to stuff I'd hear on channel 17 or worse. Depends on the time of day, the people on, and the condition of the air, I suppose.

I seem to recall reading the echolink is down though, because the way it works, the repeater has to literally drop before the echolink person could "key" and talk. Most of the time that carrier doesn't drop-and sometimes if people are ranting and raving, the courtesy tone won't even make it.....

The website has the slogan "Ham Radio with an Attitude." You could definetely say that. That would be the PC way to put it.

I haven't listened in a while, but I'm sure its still going strong.

435 is a weirdo magnet, for sure.

When I first moved to L.A. I lived quite close to the repeater's site on Saddle Peak (where it no longer is) and with just 25W to a small vertically polarized beam I could be "capture control" on the repeater, literally capturing the input and rendering it useless for all other users except the control operator/owner who could control it via the telephone.

Big deal. That got old very fast, but was interesting for a few brief moments, like 18 years ago. What used to drive the users nuts was that I was brand new in the area, so they didn't know who I was, and I could capture the repeater using low power and a beam aimed in a strange direction so 95% of all users could not hear my signal on the input, at all...making them wonder what in the world was happening. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

As I said, that can be fun for about five minutes.

I haven't used that repeater in years.

This might take some looking to find a machine we both can reach. I just checked the '610 repeater and couldn't reach it, but I'll be listening. It might be that the '700/100 machine is our best bet.

If you've got 440, it looks like I'm good on the 445.420 (127.3), 447.320 (103.5), and 445.620 (127.3) machines.

Hope to make it.

1. Posted this morning at 1:50am... #DANGIT. #I was awake then; I just didn't have the radio on.

2. It appears that they're working on the 146.610 machine - it was down this evening too. #Don't give up on that particular one just yet. #However, since it was down, we didn't get to do our regular Friday night rock-and-roll trivia game. #Double Dangit.

Well, it's a good bet, at least. #I generally don't have any problem getting into that one. #There's also a little-used repeater on 147.270 which I assume should have very good coverage down to the LAX area. #That's a plus offset [147.870 in], 100.0 tone.

Go to this page here (http://members.aol.com/kg6ytz/presets.html) for info on the repeaters I use most often, and which I have programmed into my Azden in "the east shack" [a.k.a. the kitchen]. #The ones color-coded light blue are the ones I use most often [which basically translates to "at least once a week"]. #The yellow ones are ones I use on a casual basis, popping in occasionally to talk to a friend or two while I'm scanning around. #The ones in white are the ones that I have programmed because they are local and/or are easily reachable and/or put in very good signals here, and are open, but I rarely or never use them. Choosing only 20 such machines from the local list was NOT easy. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
