We are taught to lead by example and that Leaders are rolemodels. Is that still true? Does Character still matter?

People always point to the 60s as a time when the world changed. Still, the worst anybody ever said about President Johnson was would you buy a used car from this man? A few years later, President Nixon said, "I am not a crook." 96% of those watching felt he was lying. What changed? Was it the quality of leadership?

Today we have a President who has been accused of lying. Who, when he speaks, it sometimes seems that English is his second language. Who once said that the Constitution, the same one he swore to protect, is just a piece of paper.

Does this matter anymore? Do we have a right to expect our leaders to be rolemodels? Should they as leaders - Lead? They say that every sucessive leader is worse than the one before. Can It Get Worse?

If the Clintons were having a yard sale - and had a clothing rack set up - would you buy the blue dress?

Sadly, I don't think it does, unless "character" means having the ability to inflict your view on others through very slimy means.

But, actually, the question about used cars was about Nixon. "Would you buy a used War from this man.?" But the point about Johnson was well taken...I don't think the Gulf on Tonkin and then Viet Nam was about lying. (But if anyone has any information to the contrary, I'm receptive to the idea.)

But then there's what's come out about the way Johnson won his senate seat over Coke Stevens. But that was "politics as usual" and much better concealed at the time.

Ah...that's the crux of this. It may be a two way street. Usta be Presidents and Presidential candidates weren't reported at such a level of personal detail, and mebbe that's why they seemed "larger than life."

Johnson wasn't exactly a star at public speaking.

The question's a good one...but might be unanswerable.
