I could not sleep last night. about 2 in the morning I got up and turned on the HF rig. 40 meter cw was spotty with qsb but 80 cw was very nice.

So I was wondering just how many of you out there spend much time on HF late night or early morning and why?

can't sleeep?
work hours?
The baby woke up? etc

I did not listen to the phone bands because I did not want to wake the rest of the house up. I used cw because I could have a nice conversation and make no noise because it was all in the headphones.

Back in the mid 90's I used to work a group of guys on 40m SSB starting about midnight. I worked graveyard and on my days off, I just kept about the same schedule. I remember one time getting so carried away with the qso that we were still talking as the sun was starting to rise.

If you are often on late/early where do you operate? since I often have trouble sleeping, I may try to look you up.

I'm on 75 phone nearly every night until 2 to 3am or so.

Jackson, Ms. to New Zealand at about 2AM with 80w and an attic dipole. Wife is out of town visiting our daughter so I go home from work, eat and take a 4 hour nap. I get up at midnight and on the radio for a couple hours, then back to bed for 3-4 more hours. Then to work...

I usually only sleed 5-6 hours a night when the wife is home so this schedule is a real bonanza!

At least once a week I get up at 2:30 - 3:00, more often than not a quick CQ in the seemingly dead window at the bottom of 40 will net a surprised european. As Charlie mentioned earlier, a path to oceana has been opening up. Worked a guy in Auckland moday morning (40m cw) before my flight down here to Charlotte.

Sometimes I'll fire up 40 CW about 0330 local time on Saturday mornings...just to check things out. Generally always someone on, somewhere.

Sometimes I check out 40 around 1-3am PST. I work 2nd shift so get home around then. I'll check phone, and psk31. Never hear psk31 though.. A shame.

The old job had me leaving the house at 5:15 am (1015Z). I don't have to leave for the new job until 7:00 am (1200Z).

Since it was a habit for years, I wake up some days before 5 am. When this happens, I will scan the bands.

Sometimes the bands are quiet, but most days you can find someone.

I was up last night with a sick Baby so I spent some time CQing on 40 meters. Had a quick QSO with Charlie AG4YO for the first time and worked a couple of South American stations. Just got my Extra Jan 12th so I'm enjoying DX below 7.025. Hope my CW was up to par Charlie. I've been Advanced Class for 26 years. Felt the need to upgrade recently...for some reason.

80 in the wee hours of Winter can be very pleasant...

All of the above . . . and . . .

Since the earth has 24 time zones of one hour each, sometimes you have to be up at weird hours to work some rare DX, when he's on the air during his NORMAL hours.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ...some of these late night conversations CAN lull you off to sleep with their meaningless monotone of conversation .

THANKS to some of you for lulling me off to sleep. It IS appreciated. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
