View Full Version : What are your plans for Friday night

We read the R&O when it first came out and cussed, spit, kicked, yelled, etc... #Then we realized that there was NOTHING we could do about it.

A few nights ago when the "word" came out that the final decision would be placed into the Federal Register today, CCI and I decided that we should try to welcome those that are coming into HF.

Friday night February 23rd we will be monitoring 28.400 listening for any and all stations that come on the air. #We will work all that we can (limited antennas here), and we will welcome any that tell us that this is their first trip to HF, all others are welcome too!

We would like to see a LOT of other stations on the air that have been licensed for HF for quite some time.

The FCC made the rules, the people on the air did not. #I know a lot of you are about to start typing telling me that they were lazy, did not try, etc... #So be it, they are still amateur radio operators.

I can't change the rules, you can't change the rules... #We all have 2 choices, leave it, or get used to it. #At this staton we choose to get used to it.

28.400 at 00:01Z we will be listening, if we don't hear anything we will probably call CQ for a while just to make sure...

Anyone else care to join us?

I'll be on 28.400 at 05:01Z (12:01AM Eastern Standard Time).

Don't expect to hear much, if anything... but I think I'll take 2/23 off from work, see if anything can happen on 10m on during the day.

Hold! We use 28.4 for ragchewing here. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Any newbies should try Sunday night. If the band opens our way we will invite them in.

Yeah, same here.... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Will have worked a little CW before bed, maybe 75M AM a little earlier. Will give a listen to 28.4 in the AM for a little while.

I agree. But it's a long ways to 2-land, and I don't know what she looks like, and three's a crowd. And besides, I don't drink wine. Scotch would be OK.

Of course, I could watch Jennifer. That doesn't even need Scotch.

Or more likely, I'll slip down on 80 CW and wait for the Techs who now have HF privileges to call CQ. Be happy to work on a few and welcome them to 80 CW. Might even try 40 CW.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I think I will just hook up the ole CB rig and listen to the " nice & quiet " of most of the channels, after all of the CB operators have abandoned the band to become high & mighty ham sters . Oh sure, channel 19 will still be noisy, but possibly not THAT bad since it will be a Friday night and the truckers will all be drinking Scotch / Wine and eating cheese to go with their whine.

I still remember those great times of listening to truckers on the cb rig, when they told a story, they were always the VICTIM to some sneaky cops, or the HERO to a woman . Plot changed, but the outcome was always the same...

Now it is competing gall bladder / medical problems on HF as to who is closer to death but still able to key the mike contests.

...and no one else qualifies for Social Security disability benefits but you.

you learn a lot, just by listening, about your fellow amateur radio operators . Perfectly legal and no 10 - minute call sign is required....not even a microphone is needed.

Yes it's a very good plan.

I usually only play radio during drive time.

I won't be looking out for new US HF ops because I primarily work DX.

However, I won't mind QSOing with them.

I like your reasoning and attitude.

I hadn't thought about it, but maybe parking on 28.400 isn't such a bad idea.

And getting more activity on 10 whether it is from Novices, Technicians, Generals, Advanced or Amateur Extras can never be a bad thing.

I may just have to join you.

I should point out that my plans are for Thursday night, February 22. Once the clock ticks past 0501 UTC, I'll key up on 10m and see what happens. Probably nothing, since it'll be just past midnight on the east coast of the US, and with the band in such wonderful (sarcasm, just to be clear) shape... though I'm taking 2/23 off work so I can try to play on 10m.

Why the concentration on ten meters?

There is very little going on there at this point in the cycle. There have been lots of posts about getting on ten with the newbies.

Quite frankly, I like ten meters very much, but I would not expect to hear anyone there but the locals these days.

I would prefer 40 meters as a get acquainted band because it is open to somewhere almost all the time, and unlike some bands (20 meters), the welcome is sure to be a bit better...

The concentration on 10m is because those of us without code can do phone there until we can get to a VE session.

My plans for February 23rd?

Getting a good night's sleep. The first and nearest available testing session after the R&O takes effect is February 24 in Montgomery, AL, about a 2 1/2 hour drive from my home. I figure I will test and if successful in my upgrade, will celebrate with several frosty mugs of A&W Root Beer while I am in Montgomery. The internet site lists Montgomery with the nearest A&W. I can get it in cans here, but without that frosty mug, it is just not the same. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I urge all my fellow Technicians to hit the books, not just memorize the test questions and hope for the best. There is less than a month to go before the new rules take effect.

I heard a rumor that a joint effort by NCI and the ARRL was going to go thru all the threads and pick out the 10 most obnoxious nct's (per postings). They were then going to fly them on an all expenses paid trip to Newington on friday for a special testing session at 0001 on D Day. They will be officially recognized as the "first" ncg's.

Well, it'll be like every other Friday night for me.

6:00 PM - New Jersey Phone Net 3950khz
7:30 PM - New Jersey VHF Net Early (I'm NCS Tues.)
7:30 PM - Hudson Valley Net (if there isn't traffic on NJVN/E)
8:00 PM - Central Jersey Traffic Net
8:00 PM - Big Apple VHF Traffic Net
9:00 PM - KCRA Charlie Renda Memorial Net (NYC Trivia Net)
10:00 PM - Union County Traffic Net
10:30 PM - New Jersey VHF Net Late

Yup, that is my schedule... It is what I did this Friday, and what I plan on doing on Feb. 23rd. I don't know why I should change my schedule for a new ruling by the FCC. It doesn't affect me, and if I cross roads with a new NCG, then I'll have a QSO with them. Otherwise, I don't plan on holding a "feel good" party for them since no one did that for me when I became a General two months ago.
