This is a Request for Discussion to create a new moderated discussion newsgroup for amateur radio on Usenet. #It has been relayed to QRZ as announced in the RFD. #Please consider contributing your opinions regarding this newsgroup to news.groups.proposals. #If you post here at QRZ, please consider also relaying your comments to news.groups.proposals. #If you don't have local access to Usenet, Google Groups offers free reading and posting access to the newsgroups:
Google Groups (http://groups.google.com)
I will also summarize any discussion here back to Usenet.

Paul, K3FU
Thank you and the others involved for your contribution to the rec.radio.amateur newsgroups. I have posted my comments on the proposals newsgroup as you suggested.

USENET still lives?
The last time I looked, over a year ago, it looked pretty much like a shoutfest and a place for people to file trade stuff.
I'm surprised its still even being pursued this heavily, but I guess it is a simple and easy to use format, so thats probably why its still going.
But seeing a moderated group is to be created, I'm fearing the strife and filetrading I mentioned before is still mostly the prevelant useage.

I don't really like most moderated groups, but a group of people with some serious issues had taken over rec.readio.amateur.policy, and were starting to spread their sewage onto the other amateur radio groups. While one can of course filter messages and senders, there was one joker who would open up new email addresses just to go after people.
I ended up switching to Xnews, which offers some relief. But I would still prefer a group that doesn't require me to filter out 90 percent of the posts.

Usenet is one of the few places on Earth (cyberspace included) of which on a regular nominal basis, contains a far greater percentage of 'unusual and/or unbalanced people' that would that occuring at a *Hamfest*, a *Model Railroad & Train Show Meet* and finally a purbred *Cat Show* all combined together. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
(Assuming the same were ever attempted in one fixed indoor location, for purely scientific study of course!) #
Needless to say, a moderated ham radio group on Usenet is both very welcome and very much needed. #

I have abandoned the USENET because it is overrun with vermin. A moderated newsgroup would be welcome and is apparently the only way that civil discourse can be conducted. For at least two years I have been using webforums because only there has some level fo decorum been enforced. It only takes one or two dysfunctional personalities to destroy a newsgroup.

A moderated group can be a double edged sword depending on the moderator. If the group would truly have a neutral moderator then it would be welcome, only problem is 9 out of 10 moderators take sides and get into the politics.

Hey guys...
I used to be a very active usenet particpant but since the advent of very usable sites like this one, my activity on usenet has declined to almost nothing.
The fighting and arguing, spam, porn, etc.. All combine to make usenet a generally unpleasant place to visit.
Sites such as this make the whole experience much more pleasant and interactive, with much less trolling and no spam. Even if we bump heads with a moderator or two on QRZ, the whole experience is so much better than usenet that there really is no comparision.
So.. roll on usenet! I'l still check in there from time to time, but not to post, only to see if it is still alive. So far, it is still breathing, but just barely!

I'll just stick to QRZ, Trains, and my own Yahoo!Groups email groups, thank you very much!

Yep. #I used to belong to a club that imploded because of such an individual. #It got so that nobody wanted to come to the meetings because of this individual so the club withered away to nothing.
In an ideal world we would all comport ourselves as gentlefolk and keep discussions civil and disagreements manageable so a referee (moderator) wouldn't be necessary. #But this ain't The Ideal World; it's The Real World.

Somebody actually did THAT...?
(Sarcasm mode deactivated).
Seriously, though, a #moderated usenet group would be welcome. #Then we might get to have intelligent conversations about radio instead of the interminable nym-shifting, sniping, crossposting and flames about others' sexual preferences that have turned many usenet radio groups into toxic landfill.

Isn't "usenet" that thing you have to use Outlook to go to? I tried that once, and Outlook went to att and erased all my emails. Rather dangerous piece of software, imo.
I would delete that program if Winders would let me.

It will probably start a new game for the people currently 'infesting' the unmoderated groups-they will do their best to try to either buddy up with the mods, or try to get stuff on there and have the mod miss it-even only for a few hours.
It will be interesting to see, if the idea is approved, if the group can actually be used for its purpose. If so, its a good thing. If not, all it may do is give the moderator(s) a lot of work to do.
Who are these guys? There's been some kind of ham radio cross-posting flame war on usenet for the last 10 years it seems. Most of them making scary, creepy and non-funny anti-gay insults at each other.
