Yeah, I could see how someone would mistake the two.
(Take note that the dogs weren't tricked. #Maybe we should have had someone with at least the intellectual prowess of a German Shepard to believe about WMDs in Iraq)

Thousands of innocent travelers are safe because of their efforts.
To me that's not in vain.
If it looks suspicious , yea check it out.
