though you may also want a handheld yagi or something...or at least some sort of higher gain antenna than the duckie

A yagi does not work well as it has horizontal polorization.. an antenna with circular polorization is best.
But really its line of site communication. which is what VHF is meant for. so you need nothing more than a rubber duck and basic knowledge of the doppler affect

actually I'm well into satellite stuff and a handheld yagi is quite effective because it can be whatever polarization you need it to be. you can even decide to make a cross yagi which will give you circular polarization. horizontal polarization with gain is going to be better than vertical without gain anyways because there's cross polarization loss either way but the one antenna has more gain to it

Yeah, I've heard they get pretty big pile ups, so you'll need a lot of patience too, probably.
