Article would be stronger if it explained what the Lions were or had a link to the organization's site. Granted those are easy to find, but the reader shouldn't be expected to be the one to dig.
Geeky little contesters with thick glasses like to be thought of as "Lions"?
Another "contest" with the band plan in the trash no doubt.

Mr. Brunton, let me apologize for the rudeness of Mr. Reynolds, K5CO. He does not speak for all U.S. HAMs.
Amateur radio has many facets, much like a diamond. Facets on a diamond reflect different wavelengths of light and the facets of Amateur Radio is a reflection of our individual needs, likes, and usefulness.
That is to say any of us may chose which facet to view and have fun viewing. If I do not like contests I don’t have to participate, if I don’t like NETs I don’t have to participate, and on and on.
There is room on the airwaves for all of us to have fun and enjoy that part of the hobby that gives us the most satisfaction. Please accept my apology for the unfriendly comments of a few.

KL7VK Kirby tnxs very well put. I do a little of eveything and yes sometimes I will work a contest mainly to hand out contacts. I do get a little tired of the me me crowd on this site. Been hamming for over 35 years and never had a problem with finding a space to rag chew during a contest. I think the problem is the few feel like there private freq has been violated, wake up guys it's a hobby those radios do have a power off button if your unhappy with what is going on. Besides the contest is only for a short period 24-48 hours you have the rest of the week to chat, do RTTY, PSK. CW, SSTV or anything else. Read KL7VK's comments above take two aspirins and go to bed.

I dont get K5CO, looks very clear to me that hes an angry man...Ive been reading his posts for a while and he cant find a nice thing to say. Is life THAT disappointing, OM?? What do you want ham radio to become to make it just perfect for you and you alone?
Ill tell you what, it wont happen...maybe you just want to say critical stuff to get a response, who knows. But its just not cool either way.
You guys have fun with Lions on the Air, maybe ill jump in there and join you....ham radio is all about having a good time in my book. when it stops being enjoyable i will find another hobby....hint hint!!

Hi all,
Pardon me if I'm in shock as I write this.
"Article would be stronger if it explained what the Lions were or had a link to the organization's site."
Oh dear, my uncle Ray and friend Norman are spinning in their graves!
"Geeky little contesters with thick glasses like to be thought of as "Lions"?"
Norm wasn't a contester nor did he wear glasses. Ray wasn't a ham, and neither were geeky.
I gasp at some peoples' ignorance especially since along just about every roadway that crosses a city line, just under the "welcome to" sign are plastered the club affiliations like Lions, Rotary and Elks. You never heard of the LIONS CLUB?
Hey gang, every philanthropic organization I know of having such scope has Amateur Radio Emergency Services affiliations. If I were to go into detail I could write a book but I'll spare you the pain since you, no make that we have suffered enough already.
And I'll bet you thought all the Masons do is lay bricks. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Gentlemen,
While I am not a Lion's International member, I will be operating in the contest for the Bossier City Lion's Club (Distict 8L), as a 2A station.
I personally know some of the members and they are a wonderful and serious bunch of guys and gals who do lots of things for children in our community, the State of Louisiana and over the World, with their eyesight program. #They also collect old eyeglasses and frames to be reused, sponsor a series of children's camps during the Summer for children who have mental and physical challanges. #
They test a lot of the local school children and see that children who cannot afford glasses, get them free of charge. #This can truly be a blessing to parents with more than one child needing glasses.
Each year, the Bossier Lions sponsor a high school football Jamboree and money raised goes for scholarships to one to two students from each of Bossier Parish's six high schools. #It's not for athletic ability, but rather studies. #The winner's have gone on to finish college and be a good example to others in the Bossier area.
I'm truly proud and honored to know these folks and I certainly don't mind giving up a couple of days to help them out.
BTW, since it IS a contest, where do I send my logs?
Respectfully,
73,

As a ham and a Lion you owe members of the Lions clubs a very sincere apology. Lions International is one if not the biggest civic organization in the world. They assist those in need all around this great earth who need help with eye glasses and eyesight problems. We are also very active in our own neighborhood by helping with civic minded projects. The local club here at Killen, of which I am proud to be a member, has put a lot of money and time into helping with projects such as the city park. Most of our money comes from working hard at such fund raisers as selling chicken stew to the public.
K5CO - I have always found when you don't know what you are talking about the best thing is to keep your mouth shut.
TO ALL OTHER READERS OF THIS POST I appologize for the rant toward one who is apparently so ignorant but I felt it had to be stated.

Never mind all that, this is as good a reason as any for Lions to ROAR. After all, a group of lions is called a PRIDE.
Thanks fellas, now my uncle Ray who was a Lion and a Mason can rest easy.
Although I live in large metro area, it seems I very rarely hear of the Lions Club anymore. I applaud the group for taking a novel way to get their word out, and I wish them the best.
