View Full Version : Virgil Goode doesn't like muslims
Virgil Goode (R-VA) is UPSET that Keith Ellison is going to swear in with the Qu'ran. He also claims that if we don't stop illegal immigration, that the country is going to be invaded by Muslims.
Since when did mexico have a large muslim population?
Since when did they repeal the 1st amendment?
What the hell?
Virginians, did you really elect this nutcase?

Let's see at one time the country was going to be invaded my Europeans. Then it was going to be overrun with blacks. Then it was going to be overrun with certain Hispanic peoples. Then Caribbean people. Now its gonna be overrun with Mexicans and Muslims. But, despite all these people who "invaded" and "overran" it America still survives. That because America was never built with anyone race, color, creed, or nationality in mind.

Goode was a Democrat until 2000 when he ran as an independent candidate. He decided to become a Republican in 2002 and when he was re-elected became the first Republican to represent that district since Reconstruction.
He's not in my district so I don't know much about him. I've heard of him and apparently the voters in the 5th Congressional District are quite happy with him, since he has been a serial election winner even with his multiple party changes. I do know people in that district, and I have heard a lot of "rumblings" about Ellison getting elected and using the Koran or Qu'ran. Goode is probably just parroting what his constituents have said, which is probably why he keeps getting re-elected.
Right or wrong, there is a lot of anti-Islam sentiment in this country. At one time, I couldn't have cared less about it, but events have made me go from being ambivalent to being somewhat negative about it. I don't mean I want to go out and burn down a mosque or anything, but I don't like the current trends in that religion either. I've been reading a lot lately about Islam to try and understand what's going on in the world, and frankly some of the stuff I've read scares the crap out of me.
But ol' Virgil Goode is just another politician, saying what he believes his constituents want to hear.
Can I get sworn into office on the book of Satan? How about the ARRL handbook? Is there a difference?
When you swear in on a Bible, I thought it was because according to the Bible it is wrong to bear false witness and you could go to hell if you do. Is that also the case with the Koran?

the same actually... And whats the big deal. Taking an oath to your holy book isnt a big damn deal. As for the book of Satan, There really isnt one unless you count Anton LeVey's work which really isnt much. More like his book of shadows but thats about it. Satanists...heh...but I digress.. As for the ARRL...guess so if you consider them your God.

They don't use ANY book when the official oath of office is given. The oath where they swear on a book is just a photo-op.
John Adams, our second president, swore his oath on a law book. I believe FDR didn't use any. Others have used the Jewish Bible and the Torah. Will people object if someone chooses to use the Book of Mormon?
Freedom of religion does not mean "free to pursue any religion as long as it is Christianity". That's amazingly close to what the Taliban consider freedom of religion - freedom to pursue Islam without any competition.
The more idiotic part of Mr. Goode's ranting is that Congressman Ellison is NOT an immigrant. He's a home-grown black Muslim. If you're going to be a racist, at least get the concept of the people you're hating straight.
With the vast number if Indian immigrants to our country, we will no doubt elect a Hindu eventually. I hope they choose the Kama Sutra over the Baghadavida as their holy book of choice.

I'm not aware of a president doing it, but there are quite a few Jewish folk in Congress. I found references to the Governor of Hawaii and others using a Torah.
The law in North Carolina is that they should use a religious book that's appropriate to them, and it mentions the Hindu book as an option.

I must be sworn in every four years when I am re-appointed, and I don't use any sort of book at my swearing-in.
I also place people under oath to give testimony (same as in a courtroom) and don't use any book to do so. Here's the oath I use:
"Do you swear or affirm, under penalty of perjury, that the testimony you are about to give is true?"
No mention of God. The "swear or affirm" part is for people whose religious beliefs prevent them from swearing oaths. They will always answer "I affirm."

It's just tradition, nothing more. I believe it comes from showing you were not bearing weapons, a show of good faith. There's no practical purpose to it, purely ceremonial.
