FEMA Announces Severe Solar Weather

Text from the 14 Dec Situation Report:

Sunspots Causing Communication Failures

On December 12, 2006 the NOAA observed a solar radiation storm on the Sun that produced a powerful and fast Earth-directed coronal mass ejection that is expected to impact the earth around 1:00 EST on December 14th. The result of this significant geomagnetic storm is a potential adverse effect on satellite communications, HF and VHF mid-latitude radio communications, long-line telephone systems, powergrids (potentially causing blackouts), oil and gas pipelines, as well as VLF navigation and GPS systems.

A sunspot is a region on the Sun's surface (photosphere) that is marked by intense magnetic activity. NOAA monitors these occurrences and issues Space Advisory Bulletins and Space Weather Scales, introduced as a way to communicate to the general public the current and future space weather conditions and their possible effects onpeople and systems. The NOAA Scales describe the environmental disturbances for three types of events: geomagnetic storms, solar radiation storms, and radio blackouts. They list possible effects at each level.

This solar storm occurrence is Bulletin #06-4 (severe). For the next five days we could experience HF radio communication blackouts on most of the sunlit side of the Earth for one or two hours. Outages of low-frequency signals could cause minor satellite navigation disruptions on the sunlit side of the earth.

Heh heh...see? politics CAN be humorous!

I also like the earlier one about Bush blaming the radiation on Iran as a justification to invade...good stuff!

Bush, Cheney, Clinton, Gore, Stalin, Carter...who cares, they're all politicians, im sure its their fault somehow.

Oh and FEMA? Federal is their first name, no wonder they screw up so badly.

Im just a simple American, the whole political sphere has become a circus in our country regardless of which political football teams colors you paint your body with...what a joke. so humor is always welcomed here. Might as well laugh, i cant work DX today...but i bet the scanner will be interesting.

My question, and concern, is for the ISS and Shuttle crews...they've been doing quite a few EVA's lately. Im wondering if this big ole' honkin' flare will delay the operations...just wondering. Im sure they've dealt with this before, im just curious how it will affect the mission.

Actually the Alaska pipeline can see hundreds of amps of induced current from different disturbances. Causes a problem with cathodic corrosion.
They put in DC blocks to prevent this.
But this FEMA crap is just that. More bozos running the government.
See, if FEMA had really been on the ball, they would have put out the call to all ham radio operators that were code capable to stand by get get messages through when the aurora disrupts all voice communications. If you ever operated extreme aurora
