Are there many of you interested in VHF DX?
I know that I have been working my but off to find a good way for me to acheive a contact over 500km
simplex operation, I can get out around 400km in a good circle around where I live, I have an 11 element beam, Phased with another 11 element beam,
So it works out to be around 17-18db gain.
With my current 50 watts max, soon to be 250.
When I get around to building an amp.
but anyway, here is my question.
Is there anyone at all interested in this sort of stuff?
that would like to try it? or are already doing it?
2m aurora is easy for me, as I live so close to the north pole ;) so that would be my plan of choice.
well anyway, have at'r and tell me what you think.
Me, I'm interested in working some 440 up, 2m down satellites or visa versa, a dual band vertical and vertically polarized 5 element 2 meter beam is my setup. I am interested in EME too but to much darn equipment needed. I plan to do 6m SSB whenever our good friend E skip shows up. My 6 meter antenna's radiation pattern is focused right up your alley so we could do some 6m SSB during spring if you can (tropospheric ducting is at a high in the spring http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif )
Yeah, I'll let you guys know once I fully get my hamshack put together, I am basically redoing it now, new antennas, radios, ect.

Well pretty soon I will be 440mhz capable with a max 5watts pep output, I will build a high gain antenna,
As I wouldnt be able to live with a ####ty antenna.
And that would be me down for satalite work.
70cm and 2m
Yes will look forward to working you on six in the spring
Put me down for it.
cool. when spring draws near i'll get in touch.

I've worked +1000 km on 2m with only 50w during contests. in oktober, you don't need special conditions to work DX on 2m, just tropo and a good antenna on a high location. (+75m above the ground)

Isnt tropo good conditions??
so you just contridicted yourself.
Well I would love to see you come over hear to alberta and try that!
Good luck buddy.
Winters here are good for VHF, UHF,SHF but in summer it all goes to hell.
I disagree you do need somewhat good conditions,
just like HF it doesnt matter how high you are.
You need some kind of conditions to make communications better.
But then again VHF is line of sight, so really you only need to see the station, but really its almost impossible to see something 1000km away, and let alone talk to it on VHF you need the help of propagation.
Anyone care to agree??

last month we (PI4TUE, JO21RK) worked LA2Z (JO59EJ), 938 km no special conditions at all.

The question is, what 'special conditions' are. You can work about 900km on any day on 2m, with a suitable setup and a good location. From a poor location and with not-so-perfect antennas and low power, you certainly need some enhanced condx to do that.
I am a member of the DM7A VHF-EHF contest team, and we are operating from a hilltop QTH (1200m ASL) close to the Czech border. On 2m, 70cm and 23cm, QSOs of 850km and more are nothing unusual, while on the latter band these QSOs are mostly made by airplane scatter rather than tropo.
In October this year, we had excellent Tropo condx to England and worked stations over 1000km on all bands, from 70cm to 10GHz - that's certainly something you don't see every day.
Have a look at our website (http://dl0tud.tu-dresden.de/dm7a/) for contest reports, including listings of best DX, some mp3 recording of DX signals on 23cm and pictures.

from july 2006 till december 2006 we used only 50w because the PA didn't work. We've now got a new one, 350w on 2m....

Sure, I will probably catch some gray line on Christmas Eve. I will be on 40 meters later on Christmas eve.
I will be on and off all Christmas day. Listen for me on

2m and 70cm DX is very popular here in Gi. I have only ever got into GM on FM, but have heard the most of Europe on SSB with reasonable conditions
73 es gud Christmas/ Winter Solstice holiday

I do vhf stuff a fair bit. My club has a large number of hardcore vhf contesters. we'll be out in force for the contest coming up. though Kyle I was looking at your first post...you'll have to buy an amp not build one unless you've just upgraded your license then you can't build amplifiers or transmitters. just FYI so you don't get into any trouble

I know the rules. Everyone knows the rules
FYI once my licence is taken away, so is my gear.
Bring it up with IC
