Media Hype Creates Yet Another Need

It's comforting to know that concerned citizens, corporations and the federal government are shelling out money to buy bulletproof vests for dogs.

At $500 to $1,800 a vest, the protection does not come cheap.

The Department of Homeland Security, as part of its Urban Area Security Initiative, granted Columbus, Ohio $7,348 to purchase eleven bulletproof vests for their dogs.

Spend the money on body armour for our soldiers. They need it a hell of a lot more!

Consider it a protection for an investment.

By the time a dog is trained it represents a 10,000 to 30,000 dollar investment of the taxpayer's money. #Another grand to keep a bullet from neutralizing the investment is prudent, don't you think?

Edit:

One of the coolest cop dogs I knew, Panter, was taken out by a bullet when he was about 5 years old. A beautiful black German Shepard that wouldn't hurt anyone unless he was protecting his master. What a waste and a shame.

Military working dogs ARE weapon systems in their own right, and deserve the same protection we afford their handlers. #It's a team, plain and simple.

Same goes for the police K-9's.

Police trained dogs are not only an investment but save time money and human lives by doing the job they do. Drugs dogs recover thousands of pounds/dollars worth of drugs which would otherwise enter the market and take the lives of our children. Anti terrorist dogs, both millitary and police, are used in situations to save the lives of both hostage and officer alike. A little protection goes a long way. May I suggest that if a country's police/millitary service can't afford the relativley few pounds/dollars it costs to protect a working dog they shouldn't use them and also if they can't afford to equip their soldiers properly, they shouldn't invade other countries no matter what the excuse!!

Since they're deployed in the heat of the desert, do they have special armor for hot dogs?

(Okay, okay--lame pun)

If you have ever worked with, or watched a police dog do his job, you would realize the money is very well spent. #These animals do amazing things, on a daily basis.

I am glad to see our K9 partners are getting the protection they deserve. Yes 10-30K is a conservative figure for training working dogs, and that figure doesn't start to come close to the actual training hours vs dollars per hour required. Stop and think about it, those so called dumb animals allow us to complete task's that would be impossible for us so called high I.Q'ed top of the chain superior beings to do by ourself.

Hello.

I would have to say that if given a choice between a servicemember and a KBR employee getting a flack jacket?
ALL KBR employees get the PPE for the job, including a full NBC suit and FULL body armour, and that crap is heavy.
So, to say a dog is not to get at least the same level of protection is insane.
$1200? that is just the cost of doing business, get over it.
And, odd as it may sound, the KBR PPE works better than the military issue stuff, it protects the legs where the GI stuff does squat.
The only bad news is no weapons of any kind.
But a 4 grand PPE is nice. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

How Ironic. Buy the best stuff for the pooch and screw the soldier. The stuff they issue is CRAP!!! But hey, only the best for our boys and girls in uniform right?

Body armor for dogs is a total waste of money simply because it won't protect the dog from a direct hit from a military-caliber weapon. Sure, the round might not penetrate the armor but the shock of the impact will kill the dog.

It seems that Robert McNamara's Whiz Kids are still with us. Which would explain a lot.

At least this money is being spent to protect an actual investment.

I'm still trying to figure out why $400 was needed for a toilet seat when you can get the same thing at the local home depot for $29.

All I gotta say is those things had better been heated, and had a 10 year warranty for that price....

Yeah sure, that's why drugs have been getting more plentiful, easier to get, and of better and more potent quality year after year.

Humvees... armored Humvees...
The kind our troops need: armored Humvees.
See what Rumsfeld did?
Shortchanged in Iraq:
Our troops blew the lid;
Junkyard armor that they hocked.
No Humvees... armored Humvees.
They're bogged... down... where... they... fight.

2nd ditto and the dogs have a higher IQ than a lot of humans I know.

Oh yea naysayers, heaven forbid a close relative of yours should ever get buried in rubble or lost deep in the swamp, and one of those useless four legged things actually tracks and finds them. But then again what am I thinking! We trainers really owe this to the general public don't we? I guess this is just another of those RIGHTS things people expect. Man I gotta say being a trainer sure is a thankless job!

It doesn't have to be either/or, both K9's and GI's can receive the armor they need. Military, search and rescue and police dogs are all valuable monetarily and in the jobs they do. I've had the pleasure of working with many amazing K9 officers and their dogs over the years, and they are priceless.
