View Full Version : Radio Manufacturers

As we all know there are many big radio companies out there and some of us (me) basically belong to one by the radios we buy. For instance, I am a Yaesu guy, every single radio I have ever owned is a or was a Yaesu, FT-100D, FT-1802, FT-840 and VX-7R and I am planning to trade the 840 for an FT-857D. So, which companies do you personally prefer? As I told you, I am yaesu geek and proud. HIHI

Yaesu and Icom. HF rig is Icom, VHF rig is Yaesu. Love them both.

MOTOROLA Take each brand apart by the covers and just plain look, Motorola uses more sheilding and much better design by far true I own several radio brands but Moto engineers it right.

WHOO! Oh yeah, the yaesu handhelds are awesome! I have the VX-7R and it is tougher than anything out there. We had one of those emergency drills, a tornado hit (just a drill), it was realistic based on the fact that it was raining harder than you could imagine. Everyone was hiding their handhelds from the rain but my Uncle and I weren't, we both have YAESU handhelds. Waterproof and shock proof. Okay okay, water resistant, but that should be enough. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't like Kenwood VHF-UHF rigs except the APRS rig but I love the HF radios. Especially the built in TNC and autotuner and satellite #features. But they are to dang expensive. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I like them all. I had a Kenwood TS520 for awhile, now have a Icom IC-765, Yaesu FT-817, Yaesu VX-7r, a bunch of Standard HT's, and more. Just like dirtbikes. I don't really have a preference of bike manufacturer (Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, KTM, etc, etc). I have a Yamaha bike, Kawasaki ATV, used to have a Kawasaki bike, and wouldn't mind a Suzuki, Honda, KTM, or others.

Motorola is cool, but everything is so expensive! And programming costs a fortune, and to program the stuff yourself is expensive, with all the RSS and stuff. I think Standard is a nice, cheap alternative to /\/\. My $30 Standard HT that was originally about $500 new is much nicer than newer, more expensive Motorola radios, at Ski Patrol.

I'm a Yaesu guy myself. I currently have a FT-60R and love it! I plan on getting a FT-897D here in the next 6 months or so...

Is your avatar the blue screen of death? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I got sick of seeing that a long time ago. For internet, iPods, iPod firmware editing, I use an iBook G3 800 I bought last summer. I love Max OS X. Only problem is that the version on my iBook is old.

I love my FT-817! And the auto tuner in my IC-765 tuned a big problem in my antenna tonight on 80 meters. My antenna (GAP titan) is supposed to do 80, I think, but it doesn't really, and I got it free. It didn't help that it was raining (in Dec in MN!).
