View Full Version : Who is doing phone Sweepstakes this weekend?
I'm looking forward to this one!
I have a half day at work on Friday, then I am driving to the station to get the bugs out and check prop on Friday night.
I am anxious to see how the new right-angle loop I built for 40 will work out, and I hope 75 is better in the midwest this year. #Five hours into the contest last year, conditions went waayyyyyyyy long and my 75 inverted vee became worthless. #It was so bad that I went to 160, without an amp, and was happy to make about ten q's.
Who else is planning to give it a go?
I might do it as 9Y4RAJ if I'm able to set up quickly.
I leave Saturday morning.

Yep I am.
I thought you could work it as a DX station, and put your ARRL section as "DX"?
From the ARRL site...
"1. Object: For stations in the United States and Canada (including territories and possessions) to exchange QSO information with as many other US and Canadian stations as possible on 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands."
However, maybe they should allow one, especially on Sunday when the rate craps out!

Yeah I figured so.
I've seen (or not seen) those bikinis you're talking about.
Speaking of which, Venezuelan women are some of my favorite. #Not only are some of them drop dead gorgeous and sexy (really nice curves), but they are quite friendly as well.
We used to travel there and we would meet up these women at a roadside stand selling arepas. #Next thing you know they invite us home for dinner. #Imagine that - perfect strangers inviting you into their home. #How is that for hospitality? #
Yep, I know there is the possibility that you could get kidnapped, but we weren't. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'm thinking about it. #But I'll probably be late.
The contest starts at 4:00 local time. #At 3:30
my #1 ranked alma mater vs. #2 ranked northern neighbor. #Buckeyes vs. Wolverines.
Both teams are 11-0 going into the game.
This has been the most exciting season since the days of Hayes vs Schembechler!(sp?)
So my decision is a yackathon vs gridiron. #I'm glad the game didn't happen two weeks ago!
And FB on bikinis. It was my visual delight to be at Myrtle Beach several years ago when a stunning blonde induced a wave of turned heads by walking the beach in an illegal thong. I had never seen so many guys get smacked by gals for looking. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I will be there but not pushing for big numbers. I'm one of those that give out contacts rather than sit on one freq and do a lot of calling.
Although I see on the ARRL site that there is a pin for over 100 contacts (if I have the right contest in mind). But that should not be hard to get with an entire weekend. Last time I tried to get 100 contacts on a weekend phone contest, I had no problem. It took about 10 hours of working the rig, which I spread out over the weekend.
Hope to see some of you there.

I have a pretty good bikini detector Walt. My own design. If they're wearing them I can find them.

I'll be there hoping conditions are as good as they were for the CW version. My low wire worked great on 40 & 80, I had over 300 Qs on those two bands alone and finished with 76 sections. Not bad for a little pistol.

I'll be on - full 24 operating hour effort. #Gotta retain that divsion plaque from last year.
Ideally the goal is to break the top ten this year, but with so many Left coast stations active in this one, I think a more reachable goal is 250,000 points.
Let me stress a point that has possibly not been made very often in this forum:
=You do NOT have to have a big antenna and a linear to do well in this contest!=
Repeating.
=You do NOT have to have a big antenna and a linear to do well in this contest!=
I did the CW test two weekends ago with a 80 meter quad and a 20 meter delta loop and 100 watts and made over 400 CW contacts in about 7 hours - all but 5 ARRL sections.
Stacks and high monobanders DO NOT necessarily work in this contest. They're too low angled and will skip right over most of the USA.
Where I am going for the SSB test, we're setting the TH6 at about 55 feet. #No higher. #With dipoles and loops on the other bands, I should do well.
I plan on playing saturday night and sunday.
I did a Clean sweep in the SS CW contest, But I was in class "A" but I used the spotting net to get the last 2 sections I needed, so I didn't even turn in my log.
This time around I will go as
"U" so I can legally use the spotting Net.
Hope to see you guys and girls this weekend.

You could always submit your log as a checklog to ensure folks got your exchange correct!
K3STX
11-14-2006, 08:17 PM
I think you could turn in your log, as long as you submit it as Unlimited (even though your exchange was class A) you will be OK. People start off in class A and then turn on an amp (or use spots) all the time, I think you just change your entry category at the end.

I gave out a few points in 15 metres mobile on the way home from Ft. Wayne. 15 seems to open up on cue when these contests happen. It's my most heavily worked band mobile even though I often can't get a good match. I apparently get out well in it. A fellow in California commented that my signal was exceptionally strong and clean. I also put a 59 signal into Honduras before it started. The 102" whip strikes again.

I sat this one out. I'm not much of a phone contester anyway. I'll try to get a cw contest in at some point yet this season. My new shack doesn't have a computer in it as of yet. In a way, that's been really nice, it's just radio. However, I miss the digital stuff, so I'll throw together another computer for use down in the shack. I certainly wouldn't do a contest without a computer anymore. Hand logging and duping is a waste of time.
Also, too much good football was on this weekend, not to mention my alma mater opening basketball season in a brand new building (which is on right now) and a list of honey-dos, which will NEVER get done any time soon (we moved into this house a month ago.)
Anyway, no Phone SS for me this weekend, but I did listen to it for a bit, and that's really enough for me.

I had far more fun than I anticipated I would have. I think that was my first phone contest, and "Hi" CBC, I know we worked late in the contest (I think it was late).
Since I'm not a phone guy, no voice keyer or anything. It was funny/wierd, at about 1 am local on Saturday I found myself calling CQ and getting my OWN call wrong! I get all screwed up with phonetics, and even though I was staring at the piece of paper saying "Kilo three Sierra Tango X-ray" out would come "Sierra Texas Radio" and at one point even "Sierra Texas Oh"! How strange. My mind knew it was WRONG, but the mouth would not cooperate.
Finished 8 hours total (family/kids duty) with 388 QSOs, 71 sections and 55,096 points. I am excited for the next one, it really was alot of fun (and more interesting than a "59 Maryland" exchange).
If I worked you, thanks!!

I usually submit a log, but had just came back from a trip was tired. Never did put the rig in the van.
Got home and decided to just give out some points for a total of about 90 minutes or so. 51 contacts 37 sections including Pacific on 15 meters.
What was interesting is that there were a fair amount of regular rag-chewing on 20, 40, and 75 meters at the time I was on. It seemed like contest activity was down a bit, at least from my small window of perspective.

I enjoyed the longer exchange in this contest... Much better than UR 59, Later dude. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I wish more contest had a more intense exchange.
Now this is probably not a popular opinion, but, I found that I am not fond of the automated macro's. I was really put off by them. Here I am taking the time to make my exchange in person and I get a button pushed on me, geez . No wonder you were able to make 5 million QSO's. Your computer did half the work.
We find ourselves in almost constant conversation about the dumbing down of ham radio. Is using the macros contributing to this? My very first thought after about ten of these things was this; If I wanted to listen to pre-programmed recordings all day, I could just call my bank and "press 9" until I had my fill of it.
Other than that slight hang-up I found myself having a really great time and enjoyed hearing so many stations on the air at the same time. Remember, I only received my license during this bottom part of the cycle. So everything is cool to me--except macros. Geeez!
I only made 120 contacts, but gained ground on my WAS goal and really only keyed up for a few minutes every time I passed the radios on my way to do something else.

Not till I get good with my bug please.
I can't imagine doing SS with a straight key for 24 hours. My forearm hurts just thinking about it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hey Paul... Did I *really* hear W2CDO working SS this weekend?
I thought you guys never ventured above the low 100. What's up with that? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I was just talking to my nephew about, "Someone should sponsor weekly mini-SS the way NCCC sponsors mini-sprints." We were discussing how hooked on SS we are, but not Sprints. I know there must be more SS fanatics like us.
Might I suggest the number be the SKCC #, leave the rest of the format intact.

001 A ACØH 215 IA instead of 001 A ACØH 92 IA?
Good idea.

No. #Put your SKCC# where the SN goes. #Your check would be the same used in SS--your first year licensed.
It would mean you send the same exchange each time. #
You'd still be getting number reception practice, though.
You'd send:
215 A AC0H 92 IA.

How do we keep score?

Rob,
You did indeed hear me working Peter, W2CDO this weekend. I was at HIS place the last two years at SS CW in Multi-Op, but this year I did it from home to get points for PVRC. We BOTH donned the yacrophone to "do it for the team". It was so strange, I had to ask him if it was actually HIM on the mic (since he signed M and I knew he had another guy over). It was indeed him, I did not even recognize his SSB voice! It was very weird. But as I said, it was a blast, I really enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
By the way, I talked to Mike, WA3KYY only 5 minutes before Peter!

Scoring would Q's x Sec. But DX would count as Sec also--for the sake of DX SKCC members. And non-members could jump in, using 000 as SKCC #.
Hey, Tom, what thinketh thee?

Aha! Didn't work either of you, but got NN3W very early on. Lots of MDC activity -- second only to SCV here.
Good luck to PVRC -- I remember that group from WAY back.

The final tally: 1098 q's and a sweep, 175,680 points. The voice keyer was a PITA, also lost an SB221 and a remote antenna switch box.
Good thing I had back-ups for both.
I also worked AC0H, N9XR, NN3W, and W8CBC. See you next year!
