View Full Version : Don't like the attitude so, wheeeeeeeeeee!
This came up in my 6 meter search on ebay. 1.6 KW mobile "10 meter" amp (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320047847637) I happened to see the response he made to a comment that was sent to him. It was not a response that would encourage someone to buy something from him (nor is his feedback).
So, being someone who comes by a smart mouth kinda natural-like I had to send him this comment;
Also what you have here is a CB amp not a ham amp. It likely has a broad enough bandwidth in design to cover a much wider range of frequency than CB but would in fact be a less than adequate design for all but the least discriminating ham.
Since we can't do much to get this junk off the market, we should at least annoy the be-jeepers out of the sellers, at least the ones with a bad attitude!! So if you wish to fun send him a comment. Remember, only the truth hurts so keep it factual! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Yeah I know, they all say that! Either that or "its a 600 watt CB power supply as I understand it".
I just thought his attitude was crummy in his response to the first comment.
Just a fun thing while the bands are slow. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Typical CB'er who drives everything at twice the specifications which is probably why the 2SC2879s had to be replaced. The spec sheet clearly shows these as 100w.

Yeah, I used to not care either... Until these bozo's started showing up on ten meters, both on my frequency and with their radiated garbage from eleven meters.
This is no lie... I once had a CB'er wasting parts of the fifteen meter band with crap; and the offending station was a trucker in Alabama! (on the infamous sooper bowl 27.025)
Alabama to Washington on a harmonic! That's why so many of us get P-O'ed by the actions of those clowns.
If they could manage to keep their trash on eleven meters, it might be different.
Keep your head in the sand if it makes you feel good, but mark my words: when the next cycle hits, ten is going to be rendered almost useless byt these idiots. Just the other day, one showed up on our Sunday night net on 28.375, hollering for "The Northern Cali unit 16!"
Watch and see...

Obviously you don't care since it appears you don't work any of the low bands. Perhaps you will care if you ever try to work 10 or 12 meters, and as was pointed out some of these amps are so dirty the harmonics cause problems on other bands as well.
Six years ago I had a "good buddy" with one of these dirty amps about 500 yards down the road from me running it through a six element yagi. He wiped out many of my 10 meter QSOs. I filed a complaint with the FCC and it continued for nearly a year until one day it stopped. His ERP was outrageous, my Startek ATH-15 would lock up when he transmitted.

JQM,
I find it amazing that some CBers choose to ignore Part 95 of FCC rules. Even more amazing is the fact of the lax enforcement of these rules. Freebanding, the illegal use of amplifiers...er... excuse me..."leeneyars" are part of the problem on "The Children's Band" and not part of the solution. Tain-fer?
Like you, I'm not the "CB Police". If those people want to key up over each other with 50 kW of power, get drunk and stupid (which seems to be the norm in my neck of the woods), so be it, but they had better stay away from the Amateur bands until they get a license.
If a CBer wants to take the test to become an Amateur and can live by rules and regulations, he will be welcomed with open arms and elmered. But I have found that the vast majority of local CBers here cannot handle the math for the basic electronics in the Technician's test. A lot of them haven't got a clue about something as basic as "Ohm's Law".
Thankfully, I have no need of returning to the "Sesame Street Band." If they just stay on their band, they won't have any problems with me.
This is KAIM 1769 and I'm back quiet.
I report CB amps whenever I see them.
At least if you're listing a CB amp, don't say it's a CB amp.

You may use any of my frequencies, and thanks for asking.
Check at the front desk of radio WG7X.com and we will schedule a frequency for you with dates and times.
Naturally, a small fee is required, cash is preferred, but major credit cards also accepted with proper ID.
Thanks and come again!

Hello.
That is a Texas Star sweet 16.
It is intended for 1600 watts swing.
What is inside is a bunch of 2 transistor boards, 1 driving the rest.
This unit has the blower option.
I got one cheap when TA got busted and sold them off at clearance.
I have the Texas Star 377dx high drive with a true modulator to play with AM.
Low level modulation and the fact that the things are way overdriven is the primary reason for all of the trash.
High level AM modulation and just a carrier gives a very clean signal.
Do I agree with the selling of CB amps?
I would not know, I have never sold one.
They make good pre-built units for experimenting.

Being that its 1.6 killerwatts, and probably being ran into a nice magmount on the roof, you won't have to worry about this person breeding.
In fact, if they talk on it for a few minutes (and their altenator holds up) they might start smelling something-themselves starting to cook slowly!
A little more baking and the ability to think may be impaired also.
But they will be walking all over people, fer surrrrre fer surrre!

Eight of those 2SC2879 transistors are not rated for 1600 watts, they are rated at 800 watts. If the amp is being overdriven to the point of producing 1600 watts those transistors will need to be replaced often.
And the term is PEP (peak envelope power) not "swing".

Hello.
Swing is what the CBers call it.
And, yes, this swing thing is to drive it to full flattop.
PEP? most CBers would not have a clue.
To them the RF transistor is a pill.
RF output is measured in how much total power is at peak, never mind that half is everywhere but on the frequency in question.
That is the issue with a fair number of "shootouts".
So, yes, it is in fact a poorly filtered 800 watt amp.

Usually, shootouts that involve money (purses and side bets) are decided by "Watergate" recorded by a monitoring station 20-40 miles away. #When they start using their ingenuity on the HF bands, the shootouts will be trans-atlantic on 20 meters.

Gee, they use "16 pills" and the power of a broadcast station to do what I did with a 6AQ5 and 5 watts. Amazing, idnit?
"BTW, can someone please show me how to hook 72 volts to the 2SC-2312 transistor final that is in my CB radio?"
Nah, just pry the terminal strip off the top of a 9V battery and solder an AC line cord to it. Disconnect the battery in your +2 power mic and hook up that cord instead. Not only will you never need batteries again but your audio will be really loud.
Would you believe a CBer actually believed me and did just that? SURE you would! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hello.
For what it is worth.
Some of the CB junkies really get into that stuff.
The amps use broadcast transmitter finals modules.
One module can do 12000 watts at 72 volts.
There are 3 locomotive alternators, each can do 55 Amps.
So that thing is putting out some power.
The reason for the odd mounting of the antenna array.
The antennas directly connect to the bar, the bar is insulated from the body of the truck.
At this power level flashover is a real issue so the solution seems to be this.
And, as the picture clearly shows, one 12 volt 200 amp big truck alternator runs the radio and the pre-drivers.
Why? who knows.
Here's another classic on eBay right now:
Quote[/b] ]This is a Texas Star mobile amp. The Twelve Gauge DX-1200. Amp looks and works fantastic.1200 watts O' power.Auction comes with amp and remote.Stash this little baby somewhere and keep the remote handy for that special someone to squash or to reach out and touch someone in skipland. If your looking you already know what the amp is.This unit works as discribed but as with all electronics,it is sold "as is".But it works GREAT! - Unit will be bubble wrapped and packed well for shipping,I know how to pack my feedback shows that. This is an amature radio amp,It is not only not intended to be operated on the CB frequencies,it's allso ILEGAL!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230053968787
So reach out and "squash that someone special" or talk to someone in "skipland" but this unit is not to be used on CB. What a riot.
