View Full Version : WHO ARE YOU GONNA VOTE FOR?

KW4MW

I am – as of this date – still not certain of whom I should vote for next Tuesday. #This is not a condition of not knowing enough about my candidates; indeed the opposite is true, that I know them only too well. #I wish it was as easy as declaring party loyalty and voting a straight ticket, for those of you in that mindset I envy your simple black and white take on politics. #

The problem, as I have seen it evolve time and again, is that no matter who is elected to office sooner or later they will disappoint their constituents. #No matter what level of government, municipal, county, state or federal, an overwhelming majority of our elected officials will sell out to special interest groups, lining their own pockets in the process and to Hell with the loyal voters that placed them in office in the first place. #

Sadly, although this disappoints me I am not surprised. #The system itself is flawed as it was designed over two hundred years ago when loyalty and honor meant a lot more than just mere words to use to gain office. #Today any scoundrel can promise to make our lives better, become elected to office and then do as he or she damn well please. #

The problem, as I see it, is their lack of accountability to the very people who voted them into office. #They are only accountable unto themselves and there is honor among thieves. #It is only near the end of their 2, 4 or 6 year term that they begin to pay us more than lip service. #

Vote out the incumbents – won’t happen. #Vote against the party in power – big deal, you’re just replacing one set of crooks with the other. #

I’ll end my harangue with the words of Peggy Noonan who sums up the situation thusly:
Quote[/b] ] It is not so hard and can be a pleasure to tell people what you see. It's harder to speak of what you think you see, what you think is going on and can't prove or defend with data or numbers. That can get tricky. It involves hunches. But here goes.

I think there is an unspoken subtext in our national political culture right now. In fact I think it's a subtext to our society. I think that a lot of people are carrying around in their heads, unarticulated and even in some cases unnoticed, a sense that the wheels are coming off the trolley and the trolley off the tracks. That in some deep and fundamental way things have broken down and can't be fixed, or won't be fixed any time soon. That our pollsters are preoccupied with "right track" and "wrong track" but missing the number of people who think the answer to "How are things going in America?" is "Off the tracks and hurtling forward, toward an unknown destination."

. . . . I mean . . . the whole ball of wax. Everything. Cloning, nuts with nukes, epidemics; the growing knowledge that there's no such thing as homeland security; the fact that we're leaving our kids with a bill no one can pay. A sense of unreality in our courts so deep that they think they can seize grandma's house to build a strip mall; our media institutions imploding--the spectacle of a great American newspaper, the New York Times, hurtling off its own tracks, as did CBS. The fear of parents that their children will wind up disturbed, and their souls actually imperiled, by the popular culture in which we are raising them. Senators who seem owned by someone, actually owned, by an interest group or a financial entity. Great churches that have lost all sense of mission, and all authority. Do you have confidence in the CIA? The FBI? I didn't think so.excerpt from A Separate Peace (America is in trouble--and our elites are merely resigned.) - Peggy Noonan, WSJ October 27, 2005

For the bitterly fought US Senate race in New Jersey, Donald Duck is looking better and better. We have two options: experienced sneaky and newbie sneaky. Too bad Arnie SpritzyWassa is in Kal-i-forn-ya. He could take both of these candidates in two outta three falls.

Quote[/b] ]...the fact that we're leaving our kids with a bill no one can pay...
That's a big part of what's influencing my vote.
Those in power have badly botched the job.
I'd like to let someone else try doing it better.
If they blow it too, they'll get the same reward next time.

The track records of the candidates are important, along with what they claim to stand for.
I'm still making my own assessments on that score.

My vote will reflect a mixture of the above. There's a strong middle-finger component but it is not exclusive.

What UT said. I have already voted and as usual, it was one loser over the other, but this time, the class of losers isn't as good.

We've got the Gov up for grabs in CO this year and it looks like ex-Denver DA Ritter (D) has it locked. Last night, the candidates had a little debate and asked each other three questions (Beauprez is the Republican candidate and is currently a U.S. Congresscritter):

Quote[/b] ]For Tuesday night's debate, each candidate submitted several questions for his opponent.

Beauprez to Ritter:

Will you raise taxes in order to pay for your plan to provide health care to all Coloradans?

Ritter: "No. We believe that we can do this without raising taxes."

Do you believe it was a mistake to plea-bargain legal and illegal aliens down to an obscure farmland trespass charge?

Ritter: "No."

Do you admire your opponent?

Ritter: "Yes."

Ritter to Beauprez:

Do you think Governor Owens and Colorado's business community were wrong to support Referendum C?

Beauprez: "Yeah. Because it didn't fix the systemic problems that we still got."

Did you vote in Congress to cut funding to the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which includes funding for police officers in our communities and our schools?

Beauprez: "Probably, or you wouldn't be asking me the question."

In 2005, the legislature passed two bills to protect home and ranch owners from having their property taken by private toll road companies. Governor Owens vetoed these bills. Would you have also vetoed these bills?

Beauprez: "No."

"Do you admire your opponent?" WTF??

I thought that Rick was a bit out of there when he wrote a bill to have the National Weather Service provide weather information to private weather forecasting companies free of charge (paid for with YOUR tax dollars) and BANNING the NWS from providing the weather forecasts and marine observations it now provides gratis to the public. The only NWS product that could be provided free to the public would be weather warnings, such as a tornado, severe thunderstorm, or hurricane. If you wanted the forecast, you would have to PAY companies like AccuWeather, The Weather Channel, etc. for the information the NWS gave them for free.

Sounds fishy when you look and see that AccuWeather is based in State College, Pennsylvania and is one of his corporate constituents.

I'm a Republican, but that attempt at corporate welfare from Mr. Santorum gave the GOP a black eye.

There was a political advert on radio today that had ol' centre-left me sworn to vote against a Democrat the moment I heard it. It was an out-there paranoia piece by his campaign about "the Zionists taking over our government". Fortunately it turns out he's in another district.

Last election, black voters were discouraged from voting in large numbers in at least two critical states. This year, I hear they're going to be milling around the polling places, looking menacing.

Enough is ENOUGH! Vote for change! As of 2005, the Office of Management and Budget reported that $2.3 Trillion is UNNACCOUNTED FOR in the Department of Defense budget alone. That's 2.3 million times a million dollars. The GOP Congress has essentially eliminated public debate on most spending bills, and most of them are passed late at night after the press corps goes home. Several top DoD contracting officers have resigned over corrupt no-bid contracts handed to friends of the party. They could very easily be giving a million dollars to 2.3 million of their top supporters, and we would never know.

The Congress is responsible for oversight of these programs. They have totally abdicated their responsibility.
And let's not even think about the way FEMA spreads money around to GOP supporters through their no-bid contracts and cost-plus acquisitions. How many of those trailers - all purchased at well above retail price from prominent GOP-backers - are still sitting around unused?

Did your congressman promise to serve only 12 years in the Congress back in 1994, like mine did? It's time to remind them of their promise.

I'm happy to say that I like the candidate I plan to vote for - I agree with his positions on Iraq, immigration, and taxes. The GOP attack ads point out that in his 24-year career, he never served in Iraq, but he did serve in Afghanistan and Kosovo. And he believes that we must seek a diplomatic solution in Iraq, while pushing the Iraqis to provide their own security. He supports the bipartisan immigration bill that passed the Senate and the fence. He supports middle-class tax cuts. The last time around, I voted for our GOP congressman, but not this time.

In Aug., 2000 I was at the New York State <stated below> Party convention. #I don't think they really are a party to vote for, but I was very impressed by one of their politicians. #The weather had been very wet, we were camped in a farmer's field upstate NY and the ground was ankle-deep mud. #(Everybody had a LOT of fun getting their vehicles out on Sunday.)

Sometime on Saturday morning I saw this dude in a gray business suit walking around from person to person, talking a while, shaking their hands, then moving on. #It turns out that the dude was a state level candidate for, if I remember correctly, the Assembly. #

I couldn't help but be impressed. #Here's this politician out slogging through ankle-deep mud in his suit and at any moment it could start pouring again. #I doubt if any major party candidate would have been doing that. #Have any of you seen that?

Pity I thought their Presidential candidate that year was a total non-winner. #But on the basis of what I saw that morning, they got a lot of points with me on the strength of their willingness to get out there and press the flesh under uncontrolled and miserable conditions. #

When voting for somebody for a state legislature or for congress you have to remember the party with the majority controls the agenda. So I look at the party whose agenda is closest to my ideals and I vote for that party.

When you're talking the mayor or town supervisor, county clerk, district attorney, dog catcher, etc. I vote for the person I think will do the best job no matter what party they belong to.

I've looked into the backgrounds and intentions of all the candidates on my ballot. Most of the Democrats will get my vote. Not all of them.

There are several uncontested races as well. I'm abstaining from all of them. I do not approve of shoo-ins.

Issues...

Minimum wage to 6.85 indexed thenceforth to inflation, as a state constitutional amendment. I like the proposal but I don't believe it belongs in the state constitution. So I'm voting against.

Two smoking proposals. One bans it just about everywhere, the other is more balanced in that it protects some areas (outside, at home, designated "smoking areas") from future bans. I prefer the second. But it's another proposed constitutional amendment and I don't think it belongs in there either. So I'm voting against them both.

There's another proposed amendment that further loosens the state constitutional ban on gambling. Nah.

I've read through substantial parts of the Ohio state constitution. It's a mess. Even the amending formula is subject to amendment. Ewww. I think we need a consitutional convention some time soon to clean the damned thing up.

Perhaps that'll get on the 2008 ballot...?
