View Full Version : Last night on the graveyard shift....
This is my last night on graveyard. I will never bid graveyard again. I have said that before, but this time I mean it!
The night shift is hurting the family life and the kids are getting old enough to where they actually like to have me around.
Time for the HAPPY DANCE!! (http://www.darkharbor.com/snoopydance/)

Congrats!
I know the feeling, having worked that miserable shift for a few years.
Here's to ya...

Did you get some kind of shift differential or something?
(Just wondering what motivated you to take it in the first place....)

Days off or no choice.
I traqnsfered to another dept with the airline and had to work the night shift for the summer this time around.

Some of us actually LIKE that shift!
You have all day off every day, Evenings #off..... #Once you figure out how to get your sleep time in, All is great... #No bosses around, Extra shift pay differential...
(I still hold the all-time record for working that shift at the Sheriff's Department I retired from almost 8 years ago, Almost 23 years straight!) #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Congrats.
I did nite shift a couple years ago. Man I was grumpy all the time and the yl (not yet xyl) bore the brunt of it. I'm frankly surprised she put up with me through it all.
I could have actually felt my health degrading when I was working nights. Now that I'm back on a 9-5 I feel much more normal.
I am of the belief that outsourcing to prevent US workers from working nights is a GREAT thing. Our company transfers some of its calls overseas to branch offices in asia to handle the overnight work. Internally, that is. Not so sure about externally (i.e. what the clients hear).

Some nite shifts can be OK but the one I was on was a 12x3 plus a saturday swing shift.
The worst part was that they rotated every 6 weeks.
The boss was also a real a-hole who wouldn't change the rotation policy despite the fact that everyone hated it.
I always disliked the overnight shift but as I was promoted to different levels of supervision I had to "Do my time" on the night shift. It would take me a few weeks to get used to being on nights but my days off would always screw me up. That and I could only handle about 9 to 10 months before I started climbing the walls. I knew people who worked their whole careers on night shift and could never understand how they could handle their lives basically being turned upside down.

I took a job that had shift work with the understanding that I didn't rotate. I got the job, the 10p-6a shift, and I didn't rotate. I did that for a year until I found a better job. I liked having my days off, and I liked being in charge of the shift without upper management being around. Being the kind that appreciates an adult beverage after a long shift, I found it hard for that reason (I don't like to drink alone).

When I was a bit younger I worked day shift. This was inconvenient for me as the stores in my area mostly closed at 5:30 pm. The bank closed at 3:00 pm, they rolled up the sidewalks at 10:00 pm and the streets at 2:00 am right after the bars closed.
{that last bit may have been an exaggeration}
It may well be that one of my granthers along the way was the overnight fire keeper for the tribe because third shift seems to fit me very well.
When my daughter was young at first I was out in the world driving a truck and rarely home. I missed a lot of her growing up. When she was about six I got a job locally working third shift. I’d get home in time to get her off to school.
My wife worked second shift but I’d be home when my daughter got home and we would have dinner and do any homework she might have. This worked out rather nice for two years when the plant closed.
I got a new job on second shift so both my wife and I were gone at the same time. I think the kid suffered for it.
It took me seven years to finally find a job on day shift. I was actually looking for a third shift job but managed to find one on days. This was alright and lasted for four years. I was laid off because the economy slowed down during Bush seniors years in office.
My next job was third shift again. This was the best. It was also the highest paying job I had had in years. I was making almost as much as I had back in 1974.
It was nice not to have to have a baby sitter and pick up the kid at midnight. My being there helped her grades a lot.
She graduated in 2005. The last class from Savanna High School. Several of the area high schools are combined now and they call it West Carroll High School now.
When that job ended because the plant closed {thanks GW} I knocked around taking whatever I could find, I’d work whatever hours I could get. Most of the time I was working through a temp agency. About three months ago I landed the job I have now. It is third shift which is to my liking.

Getting the sleep is the hard part for me.
It was easy when the kids were younger. I have worked 11 of the last 15 years of our marriage in the night shift. Sleep was not that big of a problem till the last couple years.
Usually it is not the kids that keep me up. I have been able to tune them out for the most part.
It is the shout of "Be quiet! Your dad is trying to sleep!" That seems to wake me up more often than any other noise in the house. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Seriously, John has one rule. If I'm on CW, I have to wear headphones. Or else, he spends his time trying to decode what's on radio! Good thing I'm at work while he's asleep.
