This is a sad moment in Aviation History. The Goverment of Atlantic City NJ closed down its in city Airport last Friday night in favor for Tax Dollars from develament. Like Meigs Field in Chicago Bader Field was Negleted then shut down.
Here is a link to Baders death>>>Bader field Story (http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/story/6794312p-6662239c.html)

Meigs Field in Chicago was closed for a number of reasons, but the overriding one was a matter of security according to the mayor's office. But the backhanded way that Dailey closed the airport (no notice, bulldozers tore up the runway in the middle of the night) caused the city to be fined by the FAA and federal legislation to be written that would prohibit a similar action by any state or city government that used federal funding to build or improve airport facilities.

I tried bringing up this website but all I got was a blank screen.
Richard,
I can see where there is a point in time for something that is no longer cost effective to be shut down. With that said, it's sad when someplace with that much history shuts down. (You would figure with all the casino's the place could produce enough revenue to support it's self)
What's next, the boardwalk? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Sadly, if the politicos could see a profit in it, they would take the backhoes to the Boardwalk tomorrow. :-( History be dammed, there's money to be made!
I liked those small GA airports when I was a student pilot.

I though America's first airport was Kitty Hawk. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

This topic inspired a little web surfing. #I live less than two miles from the "World's Oldest Airport in Continuous Operation", College Park Airport in Maryland, established in 1909. #It turns out that Bader Field, almost that old, was the first place to actually be called an "airport". #It also has some other firsts associated with it.
Good luck on getting it reopened, if that is even possible. #I have never been there, but have flown into Meigs Field in Chicago a couple times. #It was very convenient for getting to downtown Chicago. #It was a little scary; the runway ended at the lake so there was no room for error. #It was plenty long enough for a Cessna 172. #But Mayor Daley got his park.

No big deal.
I'm more upset to see the first enclosed shopping mall (Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park, CA, opened in 1964) go supersized, which they just did. It now occupies a couple of square miles and has every store ever known to man. It will take 30 mins to walk from one end to the other, or an hour to drive its perimeter, traffic depending.
Damn.
But at least the supersized version has a Nieman-Marcus next to a 4-story supersized Target store, so you can blow your wad in one place and then go save ten cents on toothpaste next door. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
