View Full Version : Kudos to Ten-Tec
I went to the Ten-Tec hamfest today, and must say it had the best tailgating I have ever seen, thanks to one rule... Radio related dealers only, no computers, no beanie babies, no power scooters... none of the crap.
Granted there were no new radio dealers other than Ten-Tec, but I did not miss them at all. Even if it was not the biggest tailgating section (It seemed sizable to me) the fact that I didn't have to just hunt for the real radio sellers and it was all radio was enough to make it good for me.

Yeah I wish more hamfests would just be ham radio only.
Computer gear would be OK with but only a few, no junk and must be sold by a seller who is selling mostly radio stuff and not just computers.

I had a great time, bought a Heathkit GC-1A that needs a little TLC, met some radio conacts in person, enjoyed the factory tour (I went on the first one, 9am) and was exhausted by the time I left. There were Ten-Tec rigs set up in a tent out front but the tent had been sealed up all night and the condensation was dripping on the equipment like rain. One of my on-air friends had tables set up and did a pretty brisk business selling connectors and antennas. Saw lots of stuff I can't afford. I had a good time!

Hamfests started going downhill the day anybody let the first computer or monitor in the place. To this day we still get the same guys trying to sell the same 286's and 13" amber monitors they've been trying to sell for 15 years.
If a hamfest is so financially strapped that they have to sell tables to any ridiculous dog and pony show, they need to seriously consider pulling the plug for a few years and let the riff raff fall by the wayside.
When the guy selling pirated software and pink flamingo yard art has a better weekend that the Ham Radio vendor who's driven 300 miles to sell whatever Ham Radio related stuff he's got to sell, something is terribly wrong.

IEI two of the guys locally was there and they did have the VII connected and working. Both made contacts using the new radio. Both were impressed, one is going to add his name to the list. The other has a Pro II and will not change. Comments were ... nice radio, display is large, but no continuous scan (have to hit a button to make it scan).
There were enginers there overseing things and getting many comments. Many notes were taken by the engineering people. So, when the radio will be actually released and for sale is a good guess at the moment.
Other comments were nice hamfest, nice to NOT see computer junque and other stuff. Just radios..!

As an Orion owner,I can say they do listen to their customers.
They are sometimes slow to deliver on updates,and I get frustrated.
I just hope when they ship the Omni VII,that it's a finished product and not still experimental.
I'm considering adding my name to the list.
