The best source for this is probably the Silent Keys list that's published every month in QST.

Good luck!
I hope you find your friend, if that is what you are looking for.
They are not silent when you remember.

Ode to a Silent Key:

'E's passed on! This amateur is no more!
He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker!
'E's a stiff!
Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace!
He's pushing up the daisies!
His metabolic processes are now 'istory!
'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket,
'E's shuffled off 'is mortal coil,
Run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!
THIS IS AN EX-HAM!!

QST is the best way to read about Silent Keys due to them having passed away and their passing been authenticated by family or close friends...BUT there are lots of licensaed Hams who are silent for other reasons..such as giving up the hobby for various reasons. We may never know their names or hear their calls again. Their silence is not golden...but maybe it is just because they can't afford to buy a new ham rig...or that they rather spend their money on a new PC. Maybe they don't want to join the ARRL bcause they already belong to lots of dot orgs and/or local social clubs.

We can now avoid buying call books and repeater directories as all updated info can be gotten from the internet. Maybe some Ham philanthropist will set up a site that lists Silent Keys and calls that were not renewed after 2 years after expiration and keeps updating it. ...until the calls involved are reissued.

w2ilp (Incidentally Lost Persons)...may be silent but not yet dead.

A good point against lifetime licenses. As long as a renewal is required every ten years, we can at least assume the recently renewed isn't a SK. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I doubt the ARRL requires membership to be listed as a SK, but it would be good to have an online database of SK's -- this question seems to come up frequently.
