Yes yes - I know somebody will have better Google skills than me and I should have known any way if'n I was a proper amateur...

That aside, I just exchanged reports with W4PL on 20Mtrs at 18:00 local. He said I was '5 and 9, North America 112' which he said to every one. I said 'You are 5 and 8 good luck'. All parties were happy.

What's N.A.112 all about then?

It's an IOTA designation, which is absolutely meaningless unless you're seaching out IOTA awards for working islands.

People sometimes do DXpeditions from islands, and the IOTA numbers are useful only to island chasers.

In roughly this time of year, there is an island collecting contest--can't remember if it's IOTA or US/VE Island contest. The "good luck" portion may have been in reference to that contest.

The IOTA contest came and went last month I think it was...

Made a few contacts here and there but the time I worked it was mostly Europe to Europe as island contacts netted more points irrespective of geographical area.

People are always saying "good luck and good DX" these days anyway... Sounds a bit more substantial than "you're 59 QRZ?"

Considering radio amateurs are in business of communicating it would have been helpful if the US chap fully explained that he was located on an island in IOTA NA-112, the North Carolina state west group of islands.

Sometimes they do that, but don't expect that in a pileup that they will always have the time to do that. Most people know what the numbers mean and you can always ask if you don't.
