This makes me wonder, so many bombs, A or H? Tonnage? I don't think a terrorist organization could launch or coordinate that many....so then was it another country? Russia seems most capable. Or maybe terrorists hacked into the weapons system of a country... or maybe it was HAL?

I caught the tail end of the first station break, and the audio consisted of CW sending "Jericho". I tried to copy what he was copying, but it sounded like an AP wire story about the baseball scores. I find it hard to copy code on the TV for some reason - I think the scene perspective shifts and the audio with it. I caught the words "score" and "scoreless" a time or two in it. I'll have to record it in the future.

For instance, standby power plants are diesel & don't use gasoline,+this lady was rabbiting on about static when they used a steel water tank to move the gas.
-What do they think the stuff is usually moved in? Also this is a farming community,so there would be #a lot of diesel available( Including in the Loco stuck out on the line out of town)

The CW messages actually give away pieces of the show.

Here is what I have copied so far (one per episode):

JERICHO PILOT
JERICHO FALLOU
JERICHO THREE

Theres no lack here. While in the navy I served on board the USS Saipan LHA-2. I was part of fueling and defueling aircraft during flight operations. We had to carry a grounding clip with us when we fueled or delueled the aircraft. The reason for this was to prevent static electricity. Which CAN and WILL start fires. We always grounded the aircraft to the deck. You would be stupid not to. ALSO, when truckers deliver to the gas stations. They are suppose to ground the tanker via a grounding clip when filling the tanks for the same reason. I also happen to be a Tractor-Trailer Driver. One explanation could be that the message actually said "1ST surprise" this week.

The spacing on the code in the beginning of the show hasn't been exactly perfect...

Also, the closed captions say "SOS"

A buddy of mine used to work at a station where the tankers came to fill up for deliveries to gas stations.

If you didn't hook up the ground to the tanker, or the ground somehow came off, the pump wouldn't start, or the pumping would immedietely cease.

On a few occasions someone would leave it hooked up and drive away, tearing it off. It would render that particular island useless until it could be fixed. There was no way it could be defeated. I don't know how it could tell it wasn't hooked up, but probably a small current or something, I'm guessing.

They had a truck 'dome out' once and start spilling, and they sent about 6 fire trucks out to it. The pump automatically turned off, and the lot was designed to contain any spill, but they still had to clean up about 500 gallons that spilled, and they had to call another truck in to drain out the remnants of the ripped tank.

Then the paperwork began and didn't end for a few months. Anyone who had anything to do with that tanker truck, etc, was questioned. Eventually it came out that the tanker was a month overdue for inspection. The fines for that, as I understand, were quite hefty-and the cleanup costs also.

I've heard of guys getting fined for going to a gas station, starting the drop, then not watching it (getting back in the truck or something). Dunno if thats new or not, used to sometimes have to accept drops at a former job and the guy would sit in his truck all the time.

Wouldn't the EMP have taken out items like studio/transmitter links, which would render local television inoperative?

A station could probably take a remote truck to the transmitter site and connect it to the transmitter, but if the feds were restricting travel and the power grid was knocked out, how could they move the truck and power the transmitter for any long period?

The site of the fictional Jericho is far from large population centers, they might not get a station broadcasting on reduced power.

It's only a television show that will be going on hiatus after this weeks episode. We'll have to wait until February for the next installments.

VE1IDX
11-27-2006, 12:25 AM
Actually the EMP would have wiped out all the transmitters and receivers.Notice how the kids were using cell phones for batting practice? Also the only cars running are those without ECM's? No electronics in use anywhere at this point in the show. So it is going on hiatus until Feb?? I was wonderin'. Would any electronics be protected from an EMP if say they were stored in a basement?

Would older tube radios and TVs be better able to handle an EMP blast. I find the concept of an EMP blast taking out EVERYTHING electronic with nothing surviving, a little hard to swallow.

VE1IDX

Tube gear that is shielded is supposed to be able to survive an EMP but I am not willing to try it out. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Some solidstate gear is specially designed ,or hardened, to withstand an EMP burst. The whole idea is shielding, shielding, and more shielding. How about a shack with copper walls buried in the basement under a couple feet of cement with lots of grounded rebar and no wires to the outside world. Not even an antenna wire.Wait for the blast and then take antenna lead to the radio. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

KI4PEQ

n0nwo
11-27-2006, 08:28 PM
That #link was very helpful. #If I read it right... it seems to me that radios and TVs etc #not connected to power or antennas AND outside the immediate area of the blast should work. #So on the show, If someone out of town had old radios and TVs in the basement they should work. #My feeling is that on the show, someone should be able to come up with a radio receiver or a tv to hook up to receive distent broadcasts.

In my own home, pretty much every electronic device I own would be toast, but I do have a ts 520 stored in the basement that could survive as long as the blast was not too close.

I got a DVD recorder, and threw my VCR to the curb... Only... I shoulda set it to record 5 min later. I saw the part where the thug got the flashlight on him, then the recording stopped (I had to work tonight), I figured someone clipped him. Glad it was done.

I love the show. Im sorta a survivalist at heart and like the premis. Theres a lot to like there... Glad theres another season coming, look forward to the seasons being offered on DVD.

Cheers....

IT BEGINS WITH # lol #

I'm such an idiot. # That is not the way it sounded though. the spaceing was wrong, at least to me. I listened to it about 10 times and kept getting the same thing. #Of course, the music did not hepl matters much.

So the last two phrases go together, and the sentence is still not complete. # It begins with 6(,) and ends with(...)

I'll say it again I'M SUCH AN IDIOT #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif #

Some time back ,I posted a comment on the episode where they collect fuel for the hospital #emergency generator.I guess my posting was too concise #, but I made the apparently unfounded assumption that everyone had seen the episode.
Several people wrongly assumed I thought #that static was not a problem when moving or dispensing fuel.

To recap on the episode, some people decided to collect fuel for the generator from various sources.
During this time, the female member of the party berated her male companions for not finding a plastic container for the fuel as "there would be a problem with static" if a metal container was used.
I said something like"What do they think the stuff is usually moved in?",referring of course to the use of a metal container.

From my experience of large plastic containers, they are quite likely to generate static discharges in their own right,as well as the possibility of the fuel dissolving the
tank.

The character's #mention of static was not the point of my comment,it was the method of overcoming it that I felt was silly.

That said, both examples of static problems given by previous posters tended to be in situations where there was a high likelyhood of a #high static buildup.

In one case,we had aircraft landing in excess of 100 knots ,then refuelling & in the other, tankers which had been travelling at highway speeds.

In this episode ,we had an old truck ambling aroung town, picking up fuel here & there.

Most older people would #have seen Super Petrol (Gasoline) dispensed from truck backs out of what we used to call "44 gal "drums in this country, with no special precautions taken, & no,they didn't blow themselves up.

My other comment was that most if not all generators run off diesel fuel.
As a foreigner,my assumption was that "gasoline"
referred to the stuff you put in a spark ignition engine, such as fitted to your Mustang,Honda etc,.
Perhaps I was wrong, & some people in the USA call all fuels "gasoline"in which case, my comment is not valid.

By the way, if the Nuclear explosion in space
knocked out all the electronics ,how come the terrestrial #Nuclear explosions hadn't already done so--remember, they were close enough to see the mushroom clouds.

a NEMP (Nuclear EMP) wave is mostly generated by an exo-atmospheric burst...has to do with the interaction of the intense x-ray flash interacting with the "Compton Electrons' in our upper atmosphere...the wave typically propagates downwards at ~20 deg angle...it interacts with
any long conductor ( power/telephone/data lines,etc...) and can generate voltages in the 50KV/meter range...with corresponding currents in the KA ranges...
