Almost 150 years ago, President Lincoln found it necessary to hire a private investigator, Alan Pinkerton, for protection. That was the beginning of the Secret Service.

Since that time, federal police authority has grown to a large number of multi-letter agencies - FBI, CIA, INS, IRS, DEA, ATF, etc.

Now comes the Federal Air Transportation Airport Security Service. Can't you see them now?

These highly trained men and women in their black outfits with initials in large white letters across their backs?

Do these officials train at the Sam Houston Institute of Technology?

They used to call NIST the National Bureau of Standards. I thought that was a good name, but they thought that the National Institute of Standards and Technology was more descriptive.

What would have been wrong with the National Association of Standards and Technology Instituted Engineers and Scientists?

I think this is much more descriptive.

That is what most of us at the airport call the TSA.

Sometimes I look at them and I shudder to think they are all that seperates us from another 9-11.

Walking through the terminal at 4 in the morning can be an eye opener. Tempted to take pictures of them sleeping sometime, but they may wake up when the flash goes off. Would be a shame to interrupt their naptime. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
