Hope I can hang around for this next one which they are predicting to be stronger than in the early 60's where 10 watts AM got you around the world with signal strengths 30/9 just about anywhere on the planet.

Great Propagation on the way? (http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/solarsystem/10mar_stormwarning.html)

We'll see.........

That don't take a whole lot. SFI over 100 with a quiet magnetic field should do it.

Now, 6-metre F2, that's what I'm anticipating. So long as we're not dumping the Van Allens into the ionosphere in order to protect rich people's satellites from the Sun anyhow.

Maybe people will realize there are hams in Alaska! It happens about once every 20 years. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I heard someone Saturday working an Alaska station in 17 metres, was hoping to tail-end them. I didn't hear the Alaska side of it though and the fellow I heard - rather weakly at that - was a familiar call. California, runs 1500 watts into something like a 45-element beam. If that's what it took to establish communication, oh well.

Hmmm, I thought the predictions were that the next Cycle would be even WEAKER than the last cycle, which was pretty weak in itself.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Does this mean we will be able to talk to each other on the radio and not need a computer to communicate ?

WOW !! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

...man I LIKE that idea...... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I DO use radios to read and post to QRZ.com. You fiber-connected guys are so 21st century.

Yep, in just a couple years, you should be able to work 10 meters with your peanut whistle rig again. I'm hoping that the prediction of a peak in 2012 is correct, because that will give me more time to build the station of my dreams to prepare for it.

The start of Cycle 24 should be this winter. Four years into it we should see good things happening...about 2010. By 2012 we could be at or possibly past the peak -- who knows?

If Cycle 24 is as good as Cycle 19 was, it will be amazing.

Paul -

There was a guy from NASA at the Huntsville Hamfest who had a forum on the sunspot cycle. Said there are two (main) groups giving the predictions. "His" group says it will be just slightly weaker than the 1958 cycle, the other group says it will be weaker than the last cycle. So I guess it just depends on who you listen too.

By the way, this guy said the following cycle, No. 25, will be one of weakest we've had in several years.

It looks like the first sunspot of Cycle 24 (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/15aug_backwards.htm) has appeared.

Unfortunately, it took a quick look around, said "What the <bleep>?", and ducked back under.

Maybe a mild exaggeration. I'll often do that to make a point. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've seen some very optomistic predictions about the upcoming SS cycle. I've seen some rather pessimistic ones. The only thing for certain is that there WILL be a sunspot cycle ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Hope my grandkids get bigger ones,
Cause I'd hate to tell the kid sit by me cause we only got 8 minutes.
Work 'em son.
