On-line less than half an hour ago - it's quite easy actually.

W8CBC

I chose it for several reasons, not the least of which is the CBC is my favourite broadcasting network.

I am:

Confused By Contraptions,
a Crazy Barking Centrist,
and Canadian By Choice.

We shall see how soon it comes through.

Given my experience with the FCC so far, it likely won't be long at all.

Congrats, I think?

I wanted to apply for a vanity call but shyed away for a few reasons -

- It's been too long. People know me as AB2MH.
- Getting ham license plates out of trenton was a real pain. I don't want to go through that ordeal again.
- I'll have to change a bunch of crap with my callsign on it already.
- I don't want to pay the fee$
- Tapping it out on a straight key or sending it out with a paddle is already ingrained

And my other callsign is 9Y4RAJ. People will always know me as 9Y4RAJ no matter what callsign I have...

Shhhhhhh... don't tell people how easy it is or you will put W5YI out of business since they charge people $39.95 for a license that costs $21.90 ($20.80 after 9/6) who are under the impression that it can't done on their own!

This reminds me of a quote from P.T. Barnum...

Oh come on now, $40 for a $21 license and $40 for a $9.95 dipole. At least YI is ripping folks off a little less than the dipole companies.

(And you really can't say YI rips anyone off. Nobody is FORCED to use his "service" to get a vanity call. Just like the dipoles, nobody believes in their own abilities so they just pay.)

'MH - the main reason I shied away from it for so long is how accustomed I am to tapping out my present call on the straight key. But I'm more of a voice op, probably about 80:20. So I'll adjust. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif But I can well see myself starting out with a KD8 from time to time in either mode and having to correct myself.

I initially wanted a GOM suffix. For Grouchy Old Man. But I guess there are already lots of grouchy old men around in the 8 zone, hee.

Anyway. Thanks for the wishes all. I'm sure at some point in the distant future I'll get nostalgic about the original call.

It just occurred to me that I'll keep the av after all. Cylon Black Cat.

Interesting decision. I've been wrestling with that one myself lately. Problem is I've been WA5VQM since I was 13 (1969) but I notice how during contests and DX pile-ups a shorter call would be nice. I've thought about W5VQM or K5VQM but I'm used to the old call. I kept it when I was /4, /6, and /7 when I could have changed it. I'd probably keep saying/sending the "A" out of habit. Plus, the call IDs me as an "OF". http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Old dog, new trick, you know the drill.

You see how I finally (after 23 years) ended back with my call. Keep yours, you'll always wish you had.

Thats what you think, ive been waiting a month. The call i want has been expired since 1997, they have collected the fees, and its passed red light review twice. and has been sitting since. Good Luck

FCP.....

Did you ammend your original vanity application? If so, the 'clock was reset' and thus the extra wait.

I consider a vanity call once in awhile just to shorten it up a bit but can't bring myself to do it. My current call is original sequential issue and the last three letters are as close to an abreviation of my last name as you can get with three letters. When it comes down to it there is something that just doesn't feel right about changing it.

Like you Chris I have been tossing around the idea of getting my original callsign back. The only reason I changed was because they were running out of 2x1 calls and when contesting everyone would mistake the WD2 as WB2 which drove me nuts. But now I have had this callsign for so long and everyone knows me by it that it is futile.

BTW Chris, I'm moving back to NJ on 9/1 ...... Hope your enjoying your new residence.

Good luck with the move Q. I am LOVING it here. And I'll be loving it even more in February when it's cold there and not here.

The only glitch here so far is the rush hour traffic. This area is outgrowing the two land state roads. But I'll adjust!

NJ: 7% sales tax, even on utility bills now. Screw that. I'll stay here, if for no reason other than to keep my $$$ out of the hands of the bosses of the most corrupt state in the union.

I changed my call from KB8YZA to AB8MA in 2001 (or 2002?). I still send KB8YZA on cw if I don't concentrate. All those Novice years http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've considered changing to a vanity, but it would be like changing my name.
I just can't bring myself to change.
A 1x2 or 2x1 would certainly be easier in a contest, but I don't think it would be worth the effort.

Andrew,

Good luck with your new one (If the commission grants the change)

I just got mine today. Didn't take long at all, just 18 days since I applied online. My new call is AA4BJ but hasn't been updated on QRZ yet. It's easy to do it yourself but I did use Vanity HQ to see what was available, so I'll send them a donation.

'LIX - Aye, part of the reason for this is my current callsign takes a long time in DX pileups and so on. I've only had it for a year and a bit so I figure it won't take me too long to adjust.

It's part of the move - I figure that since I had to change a whole lot of other stuff, I may as well get off me bum and do this as well.

I thought about getting a vanity too, but just to get what would have been my general call had I passed the first time, K3VZG. I though it would reflect my time in amateur radio.

But then some new Techs started showing up with W3 and K3 vanity prefixes so I figured it wasn't worth the effort or money.

Besides I have had my present call for almost 30 years now.

I had thought a Tech couldn't get a 1x3 any more.

Thru the Vanity system, Techs can apply for 1X3's (N,K,or W prefix).

What are red-light reviews?

My application has apparently passed one of these.

How many do they do?
