I was looking at Ebay and came across this ad!

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Heathkit-SB-220-Linear-Amplifier-with-5-tubes_W0QQitemZ200012717254QQihZ010QQcategoryZ4870

I think this is a waste of a good Heathkit SB-220 but it does make me laugh! Some people sure know how to throw away money.

I though you all might get a chuckle out of this!

That particular amplifier has had 3 additional 3-500Z tubes added AND the final tank coil has been changed out to a large one with like 4 turns of copper tubing.

Can you say "11 meters"?

This amplifier was the "talk of the town" on a couple of the Heath E-Mail reflectors several days ago.

I just sent the seller the following question:

"That looks like an amplifier for the CB Band. Isn't that illegal. Why would you make and sell something that is against the law?"

Gee. Your questions, miraculously, were not posted. Perhaps the truth needed to be edited out by the jaboneys at E-Bay. Legality? Free-banding? Total rip-off? When do these things matter in quest of the buck or by the leadership at e-bay? Next we'll be saying that stolen property or even the Brooklyn Bridge can't be offered on that hallowed site. Wonder if I can get that kind of money if I put a leaf blower on top of my old Heathkit 2 meter lunchbox?

I bet if I bolted a vacuum cleaner motor to the top of my AL-811 I should be able to get at least $3000 out of it... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Even at three grand, I predict some freebander idiot will end up with it.

A) What a shame to butcher up an SB-220 like that.
B) What an additional shame that it is clearly intended for illegal use.

73,
Mike

I just sent him a question, too.

"What possible legal use is there for this abomination??"

Bragging rights on the air and in the local 'Freebander CB' club. Maybe the fool who buys it will fry it the first time out.

Ah, yes, and while you are saying "CB," you might also say "Add power mic, with control full max, so you can hear the blower better." Wonder how much this thing puts out on 27 mhz on AM! And on how many channels all at once.

For a kiloBuck more you could have an Alpha 99. Worth waiting a little while longer. ;http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The auction is over and he didn't get a single bid. I guess there are smarter people out there than him!

The thing I couldn't figure out was why he used five 3-500Z's? Wouldn't it have been easier, cheaper, less drive and more efficient to use a pair of Russian 4cx2500A/GU-84b tetrodes. I see them all the time for about $150 on Ebay!

I also bet clowns like him do the same butcher jobs to cherry Alpha amps http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The blower on top is hilarious. You see ads like this for cars all the time. People think that because they've spent X dollars improving something that it's worth X+Y where Y is the value of the item without whatever cost X. Of course this only works with some things, namely, things that in great condition have a value greater than or equal to X+Y to begin with.

If an SB220 is worth $600, then I'd say his butcher job is worth somewhat less. I expect he would recover more for the parts in that thing than he would for the amp itself.

Toss that bottle of 7UP back there in with the deal, and you got yourself a buyer. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thats not 7 up, thats soldering sponge water, pure mountain water straight from the mountains of Western NC, it has magic properties too.*

*water may not be pure or have any magic properties. This water is not suitable for use in projects that may use wavelengths less than 1.32nm. Do not drink or feed to rabid amplifier builders.

Why would it need a fan in the back with the blower on top?

Seems to me the blower should be sufficeint for operation.

LNE:

Who you trying to "fool"?!!

That Motorola TMN-1001 series microphone will NOT work with the HW-30 Twoer! The Motorola microphone is low impedance and the Twoer requires high impedance.

You need to replace the microphone with something like a D-104.

Boy, the things people try to "put over" on buyers on eBay!

it may not work with the twoer, but it sure sounds great on the IC2100!

Glen:

A few years back, I ''acquired" a large load of inventory from a comm tech. In the stuff was a box full of microphones that looked exactly like that one. They were, every one, labeled Kenwood. Did Motorola make them for Kenwood or was it the other way around?

Thing looks totally stupid with all that cooling stuff hanging on it. Probably would have to shout to be heard over that stove vent fan on the top of it.

I am certain it is probably some slob bucket mouth on 75 running it to talk to his buddy across the state.

What a waste of a great amp.

At least it comes with "spare" tubes! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

FL:

Motorola started using that microphone design back in the late 1960s. I don't know if Motorola made the microphones for Kenwood or if Kenwood started having them made. The patent would have run out years ago so I can't see anything that would have prevented Kenwood from using the basic design. Kenwood having them made is the most likely.

I have sold 3 amps and every time I advertised them for sale on good ham sites the most common question I got was "will that amp operate on 11 meters?"

How much for the Moutain Dew bottle?

In Michigan, they're worth 10 cents.
