This is a staggering topic to talk about, pardon the pun.
I was really put back in my chair to hear one of the big late night group honcho's saying he comes home from work and gets on the air every night,BUT he has to have a couple of quarts before he can sit in front of the mike and talk.

Booze has been the drug of choice even before they repealed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.

It would seem to me if you have to have booze to get on the air you have a problem that should be delt with by Professionals NOT Amateurs.

AO -

Check the classifieds section of any QST. AA nets are available.

I've been a friend of Bill W. for 13 years. The best 13 years of my life.

73,
Mike

PS - it's difficult to post anything thought provoking on this site without the usual trolls belittling your actions. There is a pretty standard group here on QRZ who, evidently, have nothing more important in their lives than making fun of others. Kindly ignore them. Congratulations on your sobriety!

Good for #both of you! I Never had that kind of a problem myself but I know for a fact that alcohol abuse can and does effect whole familes.

I'll raise my DP as a toast to all those who are in recovery and continue to work the steps to stay clean and sober any day!.

AA only works if you work it.

Thank you Bill W. And my God (as you perceive Him) contine to bless all those are "working their program". And that goes for ACOA, Alanon, Alateen, NA, SA, and GA too. Those 12 step are for EVERYONE who sincerely want to change their "stink'n think'n".

I understand Rule 62. Nobody makes fun of drunks better than other drunks. I attend an AA meeting every week and not a meeting goes by that someone doesn't have some good natured, but, smart-assed comment about how hard it is to deal with ex-drunks (the others of us in the house). Only another recovering drunk can make fun of a recovering drunk. It's part of the fellowship of the program.

I build and fly radio controlled model aircraft. Another modeler can call my aircraft "toy airplanes" and it's funny. If a non-modeler calls them "toy airplanes", it's not funny!! It's humor only if comes from within the brotherhood.

I went into work about 2pm one afternoon (evening shifts are among my fondest single-man memories) in 1984 and was told to go to the boss's office. #Chester Murphy said six words to me that saved my life: "Chris, you need help. Get it."

Fortunately I took his advice and life has been much better since.

I don't dare take a drink, can't tolerate laughing gas in the dentist office and my medical file has written all over it "NO NARCOTICS." Some of you who know what I went through last year can just imagine what the "no narcotics" note put me through, but life is still good.

It's how you look at it. At least I'm here to complain about it. I wouldn't be otherwise.

I am one of the fortunate ones who never had a proclivity to alcohol, though at times I enjoyed a social drink. I did not enjoy getting drunk, and somehow that kept me from stepping over the edge. Today I occasionally have a margarita with a good meal, or a glass of wine, like perhaps twice a year.

It is really difficult for the non-alcoholic to understand the mental position of alcoholism. My father was an alcoholic (perhaps I am proof it isn't hereditary??) and I would spend hours trying to figure what was going through his mind when he took that first drink of the day, knowing where he would end up.

The result was, though I never could grasp that thought, I finally realized it really was something he could not control. And that made me realize it was a disease, not simply a method of being mean, which is what I thought for many years.

Once I understood that, I looked at alcoholics in a different light. And that brings me to admire anyone who has the disease, and who has it under control. That takes immense mental and emotional strength, and that, too, is something I have a hard time comprehending. I am not sure I could do it, were I in that boat.

So, you have my moral support, absolutely. I wish you well. There is, by the way, a net on 20 meters called Friends of Bill W. I have heard it, but don't know the frequency, I think somewhere perhaps around 14260 or 14280, but I could be wrong. Perhaps if you Google "ham radio friends of Bill W" you will find it? Worth a try.

Good luck, and, as they say, "just do it." We know it isn't easy!

If a program works for you and keeps you on your goal ,then God Bless and keep at it. The hardest part is over -- accepting the fact that you have the disease. I've been fortunate and have not been so affected and cast no aspersions towards those who take control over their lives.

That's a great story. Congrats on beating it!

I had a small problem when I turned 21. I decided that drinking was new, and cool. I worked 3 jobs and still had no money, and was drunk just about every night for 2 years straight.

I was broke. I gained a ton of weight. I sweated alcohol so I was not pleasant to be around. On Sunday nights when the bar was closed I usually just went home after work. By Monday night I had the shakes and was irritable.

I had a lot of fun during those years, but I lost a lot of time, a lot of friends, and a pile of money. You never get that back.

I eventually developed severe stabbing pains in my stomach from time to time, and had a blackout episode once. I can honestly not remember about 20 minutes of my life. I've been drunk and remembered everything, but that time scared me.

Then I met my future wife, and she saved my life. I was so lucky I didn't kill myself, someone else, or end up in prison.

I only have a few beers here and there after work and most of the time that's after a 12 to 16 hour day. I'm a heavy truck mech. and work outside hot or freezing cold on the side of the highway fixing trucks that are broke down.I'm on call 24/7 thanks to cell phones. It feels good to relax once in a while and discuss what going on the next day with the boss over a beer. As long as you don't abuse it.
