A spider with a painful but not life-threatening bite has spread alarm through Austria in the past two weeks.
Bites from the yellow sack spider, which is up to 1.6cm (0.6in) long, were reported in several parts of Austria.

If I go to Austria in the near future, I'll be sure to take a can of Raid.

"I don't like spiders and snakes,
but that ain't what it takes to love me,
like I wanna be loved by you"
Good song, thanks for the memory.
Ah yes, arachnids. #
I grew up in the projects in northern NJ. #My childhood pets were cockroaches. #They're actually pretty interesting creatures for being (literally) brainless. #(A cockroach can live without food for 30 days but without water only 7. #If you cut off a roach's head, how long can it live? #7 days. #Without its head, it has no mouth and thus it can't drink.)
I gotta tell you though, spiders are scary looking things. #The bigger they are, the scarier they look. #We have some BIG spiders here in west central Florida! #The other day I took the dog out and there on the wall of my house was a spider the size of my hand. #Not hairy like a tarantula but BIG. #A big body and long legs. # The dog got within a few feet and that spider was GONE. #I don't know how they coordinate all eight of those legs but that guy did it and in a flash he had exited stage left.
If a .6 inch spider can bite painfully, I wonder what this horror show of a monster could do? #
No, wait. #I DON'T wonder. #Please, I'd rather not know!

Something else for you wimps to worry about.
Austria is a long way from America so don't get yourself into a tizzy about it. Just take one of those little pills and go and lie down for a few minutes until you feel better.

"I don't like spiders and snakes,
That's why I dated a girl named Jake.
Good song, thanks for the memory k9kxq.
I noticed that none of you have shared any spider stories except one.
What no big spiders in Texas or other parts West?

Those little black and white fuzzy spiders here in the US can chomp down on some fingers, too. Non poisonous, but they aren't much fun. Problem is they will chase you. I've walked into a room, seen one in the corner on the ceiling, and had that darned thing scoot across the ceiling getting ready to pounce on me. Wave your arm at it, and it follows with its 'head' and if you get within range, you are going to be exercise for its teeth. Been bit by them quite a few times. Darned critters will hunt you down.
And those darned 4 inch long centipedes are no fun, either.

The really fun spiders are Wolf spiders. They're territorial and will hiss at you, as far as I know, they are the only spider which actually vocalizes in a manner which humans can hear.

We have trap door spiders in our lawn here - they're rather interesting to watch. They burrow in the ground and build a door over the entrance. When it's feeding time, they pop up and catch their prey.
Overall, spiders, snakes, and hornets are near the top of my list. I've battled the hornets every summer since I moved to the midwest. In fact, the house is overdue for an inspection. I bet I find a couple of their houses.

When I was a kid living in Australia a friend and I found a spider the size of a dinner plate on the wall above the garage door at his house. His mother called the pest control people and they dispatched the arachnid (who they said had 1" long fangs) to arachnid heaven. They said though not life threatening the bite would make you wish for a quick exit.
I have a heatlthy respect for spiders since living in Australia and Florida. I hate scorpions. They've got to be the ugliest damn thing on the planet, other than Janet Reno and Hillary Clinton.
Snakes don't bother me a bit, other than Hillary Clinton. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I remember the foot long centipedes from when I lived in Arizona.
have had a lot of spiders this year. my mother in law has about a dozen orb weavers living on the outside of her house. needless to say she hasn't seen a single fly in her house this year.
have a couple of orb weavers living in my garage but I tend to leave them alone (they are great for pest control). I take raid to any brown recluses or wolf spiders that try to take up residence however.
