View Full Version : SUBSCRIBERS ON THE INCREASE

I don't have any stats to lay out, but it seems to me that there are a lot more posters in here in the "Subscribers" group than there was just a few months ago. #That strikes me as surprising considering the recent upheaval prompted by Fred's house cleaning. #From the rants and tirades that ensued, it sounded like the place was going to experience a mass walkout. #Yet now there's more subscribers than ever before, or so it would appear.

Why is that? #A lot of guys who have posted in here for a long time are now subscribers. #Don't get me wrong - I think that's great, but what has driven these folks to subscribe when they can post for free?

Twice in the past I had sent QRZ a couple sawbucks to help keep the lights on. #Then sometime last Fall I stumbled across the PREMIUM SERVICES (http://online.qrz.com/) link on the home page and decided the nominal fee ($39.95) was a good value. #The advanced search function alone has been worth the price of admission. #And as in the past, I like to think it helps keep this forum around for another day.

So those of you who have subscribed, what made you separate yourself from $40?

BTW: #Subscribers get banned like everybody else. #There's no "Get Out of Jail Free" card with that subscription.

I figured a year was long enough to test drive the site. Most shareware asks you to pay the fee and register if you have found the product usefull in a much shorter time. I have found QRZ usefull if for no other reason than keeping you people annoyed so decided it was time to put up or shut up. I knew I couldn't shut up so I put up.

I have found the extra services very usefull. I love my logging program interfacing with the database and have used ProLog quite a bit. I like the Q5 program but haven't used it as much yet.

One thing others may find appealing is the lack of ads other than the front page. Personally I don't worry much one way or the other about the ads and usually use the front page ads when I need to get to one of the advertised sites. I figure this will help the advertisers realize they are spending their money wisely so they will keep their ads running which will in turn help to keep this site up and running.

The $40 per year is not even a tank of gas anymore and I find QRZ much more enjoyable than driving to work. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Some of the new subscribers/users are probably like me: former eHam.com devotees who grew tired of what was happening (or not happening) on that board; that board could definitely use some proactive Moderators.

I'll subscribe here as soon as my next paycheck comes my way--it's worth every penny for the (in)sanity here!

Actually, I was joking - kind of sort of. But I wanted to give a more direct answer.

Danny has asked an excellent question. Took me a bit of thought to answer.

We sort of took a hit during the banning. I am sure that it affected a lot of us in a lot of different ways. A lot of things were said, and a lot of friends were hurt. When I saw the list of callsigns that were banned, I felt a personal loss.

Then Fred took it upon himself to reply in several ongoing threads, and to start a few new ones himself. I really felt that Fred felt our pain and took notice. He took the time to explain what was going on as best he could, by which I mean without airing any "dirty laundry" concerning the internal qrz conflicts we all know must have occured.

That's why I subscribed. I felt that the owner of this website was listening to us and was supporting us.

To all those banned, welcome back.

Keep in mind that amateur radio operators are some of the biggest tightwads around. I'm amazed that some of you have parted with $40 & sent it to QRZ!!!

True story:

Last month a fellow amateur sent me his QSL card in exchange for one of mine. In his envelope, he included a loose postage stamp & a sticker with his address on it. He stated on a seperate piece of paper that he was "TOO CHEAP" (his words) to send me an envelope, so would it be OK if I used one of mine?

Fine.

On his QSL card, it stated that he is a doctor.

I did a Google search on him & it turns out that he is a WORLD FAMOUS knee doctor.

That's one of the finest posts I've seen in a long time.

SAAAAAAAALUTE!

As for the pharmacist bit, I am returning to the profession after an eight year hiatus. The Board has required I go through a 1500 hour internship before reinstating my license - I was a fool to let it lapse but I thought I had retired. Wound up in the sweetest job I could dream of - I don't work in a pharmacy as most people think of it. I work in a lab where I compound medications into capsules, suspensions, elixirs, solutions, creams and ointments, troches, suppositories, various forms of injectables, iontophoretic gels, sterile solutions for the eyes and inhalation therapy, as well as a surprising array of veterinary products. Doctors call and ask us if it's possible for us to make specialty preparations - 99% of the time we can. The reputation of my work place is this: if we can't make it, it ain't gonna happen. Folks, I don't work in your daddy's drug store. I work in a laboratory. WOOOO!

Just for fun, I probably would have mailed his QSL as a postcard, using his stamp.

I've thought about sending cards out with the stamp separate and a note saying "If you don't feel like sending a card, that's cool. Please use the stamp on something else." Seemed a little too pretentious... And most hams are so cheap, they probably would use it elsewhere.
