View Full Version : New Ham story in CQ mag
I just got my copy of CQ and it has a great story about a daughter getting her license to surprise her father at Christmas.

Yes, that is a cute story. You wonder though, as I would if some of my kids got tickets; did she do it because she's interested in ham radio or because she thought it's what Dad wanted?
One is a good reason to get a ticket, the other is not.

A few years ago my oldest daughter (then age 19) got her no-code Tech as an Xmas present for me.
I was really tickled.
No, she is not interested in Ham radio.
The down side:
She said "Dad, it was a really easy test, I thought becoming a Ham would be difficult"
Me: "Gulp"

My son (KC0VKS) got his ticket last year. We had "the talk," i.e. "don't do it for me, do it because you want to). He did, passed the test when he was 13...and he's on...between schoowork, playing pool, soccer, and everything else he has going. He's talking now about learning CW...but he's also asking me questions about how soon he can get his driver's permit. Sigh....
